    About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

    About the site: Compass Children's Center (CCC) is an early childhood education center with a curriculum tailored to meet the specific needs of children living in extreme poverty and homelessness. CCC serves 70 children, ages 0-5, and their families each day.

    Salary range: $32 - $35 per hour

    Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday; primarily during standard working hours with occasional after-hours flexibility needed

    Location: primary work site is Compass Children's Center at 144 Leavenworth Street, San Francisco, with some additional work at other Compass sites nearby; one dedicated day at another childcare site in SOMA.

    Role Description:

    We are seeking a reliable and proactive Facilities & Maintenance Technician who will oversee building maintenance and safety at our early childhood education center.

    Specific responsibilities include:

    • General Repairs & Maintenance: perform handyperson tasks, like repairing equipment, minor plumbing repairs, assembling furniture, installing shelving, painting and cleaning.
    • Vendor & Contractor Coordination: coordinate with vendors including HVAC, janitorial services, IT, plumbing, elevator, electrical, pest management, copier servicing, appliance repairs, and waste management. Arrange vendor visits and ensure work is completed to standard.
    • Safety & Security: monitor building safety systems including office and fire alarms, security cameras, and sprinklers. Quickly notice and address safety issues. Schedule and oversee required inspections for fire alarms, elevators, HVAC, and other building systems.
    • Events: assist with setup and breakdown for on-site events.

    Qualifications:

    • Strong handyperson skills; great at building and fixing things and coming up with practical solutions.
    • Experience managing building systems such as HVAC, fire alarms, safety systems, etc.
    • Ability to diagnose when something can be fixed internally and when to call a specialist.
    • Strong verbal communication skills and an ability to build positive relationships with Compass staff, young children and their families, and equipment/system vendors.
    • Able to perform manual work which includes lifting objects weighing more than 30lbs. Physical demands include stooping, bending, sitting, kneeling, standing, walking, reaching, carrying and moving objects.
    • TB clearance and fingerprint/background clearance.
    • Strong commitment to Compass Family Service's mission of supporting at-risk families
    • Fluency in English required.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    • Salary range: $32-35/hr, 7.5 hours per day (37.5 per week). Non-exempt.
    • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.
    • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
    • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests over years 2-6.
    • Membership in OPEIU/Local 29 union.
