    Position Description:

    The Facilities Technician performs basic and routine facilities maintenance, construction, and repair tasks according to SJES’ service, quality, and safety standards.

    Following standard operating procedures and under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, the Facilities Technician installs, inspects, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, safety, and water management systems. The Facilities Technician also assists with general facilities projects including painting, carpentry, fixture installation, drywall, and moving furniture / materials.

    The Facilities Technician is expected to work with and / or assist the Facilities Technician – Grounds and external contractors to complete projects or complex repairs.

    Key Accountabilities:

    • Support a continuous preventive maintenance operation.
    • Support facility refurbishment and renovations.
    • Work with outside project professionals / contractors.
    • Work closely with the Facilities Director to develop work schedules for repairs, renovations, and capital projects.
    • Respond to facility and equipment alarms and system failures.
    • Prepare facilities for changing weather conditions.
    • Assists the Director of Catering and Events to support meetings and event set up and tear down.
    • Maintain confidentiality in all matters and materials.

    Qualifications – Education, Skills and Experience Required:

    • Experience in related field, preferably with engineering, architectural, or construction/facilities management concentration.
    • A minimum of three to five years professional experience in a plant of a similarly sized organization, with independent school experience helpful.
    • Great time management, organization, and prioritization abilities.
    • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Knowledge of building safety regulations and security protocols.
    • Understanding of facility equipment including plumbing, electrical, mechanical, safety, fire, and communication systems. Includes knowledge but not limited to the following:
    • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and terminology of building trades.
    • Demonstrated ability to embrace the School’s Episcopal identity, ethos, and commitment to respecting the dignity of everyone.
    • Demonstrated commitment to cultural competence through behaviors and attitudes that enable effective cross-cultural interactions.
    • Ability to leverage the knowledge, skills, and abilities of colleagues in fulfillment of responsibilities.

    • Ability to communicate in English and Spanish preferred.
    • Ability to work flexible hours, weekends, and evenings when necessary.
    • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs.
    • HVAC – filter change, check belts and motors, clean coils, clean supply and returns, check roof drains, check condensation lines and VAV boxes. Supervise HVAC vendors.
    • Electrical – replace light fixtures, trouble shoot electrical issues, replace outlets and bulbs as needed
    • Plumbing – trouble shoot restroom plumbing issues, replace flush valves, clean out drains, replace restroom fixtures
    • Painting – patch and paint walls as needed
    • Landscaping – pick up trash around campus, trim branches and shrubs and plants as needed, water potted flowers and plants, supervisor landscape crew weekly
    • Vehicle Maintenance – maintain School vehicles, clean vehicles, manage current registrations and annual maintenance
    • Janitorial – day cleaning of cafeteria, after-school lunches and events

    Collaboration and Teamwork:

    • Work closely with the Facilities Director and the Director of Catering and Events.
    • Ability to work independently and/or with teams.
    • Contribute to a positive School culture by building collaborative, collegial, and respectful relationships.
    • Participate fully in the School community. Fulfills other duties as assigned, including but not limited to lunch, recess, and carpool.

    Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

    • Ability to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools and power equipment.
    • Ability to withstand inside and outside environmental conditions, including inclement weather.
    • Ability to walk, stand, maintain balance, climb ladders, crouch, bend, stoop, lift 50-75 pounds frequently.
    • Must be able to work flexible hours on occasion, including evenings and weekends, to respond to specific school needs (snow removal, special events set up/break down, etc.)
