General Description
The primary responsibility of the Facilities and Grounds Assistant is executing the daily operations of the state 4-H center, Rock Springs Ranch. This position reports to and works closely with the Facilities and Grounds Director. Priority projects include maintenance and upkeep of buildings, water systems, vehicles, and landscaping. With over 15,000 youth and adult guests visiting annually, the Facilities and Grounds Assistant ensures that every guest experience is rooted in safety, excellence, and hospitality.
The Kansas 4-H Foundation is the 501(c)(3) fundraising arm for Kansas 4-H, the state’s largest positive youth development program, as well as Rock Springs Ranch, the state 4-H camp and conference center. The Foundation works with businesses, organizations, individuals and families who share a common desire to support a statewide effort of growing future leaders. Rock Springs Ranch is a 735-acre property located in the heart of the Flint Hills just 10 miles south of Junction City, Kansas, and is accredited by the American Camp Association.
Primary Responsibilities:
Field Work
Perform general maintenance tasks including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and carpentry repairs.
Maintain grounds by mowing, trimming, planting, watering, and removing debris.
Inspect buildings and outdoor areas regularly to identify and address maintenance needs.
Operate and maintain tools and equipment such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, and power tools.
Respond to maintenance requests and emergencies in a timely and professional manner.
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
Assist with setup and teardown for events and meetings.
Monitor inventory of supplies and equipment and report needs to the facilities and grounds director.
Collaborate with contractors and vendors as needed for specialized repairs or services.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all safety protocols and procedures while performing maintenance and groundskeeping tasks.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately and ensure equipment is in safe working condition.
Identify and report potential safety hazards in facilities and grounds.
Participate in safety training and drills as required.
Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations and other applicable safety standards.
Promote a culture of safety and contribute to continuous improvement of safety practices.
Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent.
One or more years of experience in facilities operations, general maintenance, or related fields.
Must be willing to relocate on-site or live within 20 miles of Rock Springs Ranch.
Ability to obtain within 18 months: Water Operator License, Wastewater Operator License
Current driver’s license and have/maintain a good driving record.
Have a basic understanding of the following areas:
Auto mechanics (including small engines)
Basic Construction
Basic Electrical
Basic Plumbing
Bicycle Repair
Landscaping
Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug test.
Able to lift 50 lbs., carry 25 feet, and place on a shelf.
Current local and/or state licenses, as required.
Required Qualifications
Experience in facilities operations, general maintenance, or a related field.
Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively in periodically stressful and challenging conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
2 or more years of progressive experience in a facilities or maintenance role.
Demonstrated creativity, enthusiasm, and dedication in previous positions.
Proven ability to independently prioritize workload in dynamic and fast-paced environments.
Compensation
$40,000 to $50,000 annual salary (depending on experience and housing)
Candidates may be considered for access to private on-site housing. Meals are provided on-site to staff when hosting groups on the property.
