FairVote, headquartered in Takoma Park near the metro, is a 501(c)3 non profit organizationthat is associated with FairVote Action, a 501 (c)(4) advocacy organization. Our focus iselectoral reform that gives voters a greater choice, a stronger voice, and more representativedemocracy. Since 1992, FairVote has been the national leader in developing and distributingthe educational tools and analysis necessary to increase public appreciation of the value ofranked-choice voting (RCV). We value nonpartisanship and wish to attract candidates who canwork across the political and ideological spectrum to advance FairVote reforms.FairVote, the nation’s preeminent advocate for ranked choice voting to strengthen democracy,is experiencing dynamic growth due, in part, to a surge of interest in its mission, with newresources that position us for significant growth and impact. With new senior leadership and attention to building a healthyand robust organization with real potential to transform American democracy.Position SummaryThe Social Media Associate will lead FairVote’s online presence across social media channels,including developing content, responding to stories in real time, and tracking social mediametrics on a monthly and quarterly basis. The Social Media Associate will ensure the organization’sonline voice is engaging, strategic, and aligned with the goals set by other departments and therest of the Communications Department.The Social Media Associate is a junior to mid-level position within FairVote and primarilyoperates at a tactical level.POSITION TYPEThe Social Media Associate is a union position and salaried exempt. Exempt employees areexpected to work the appropriate and necessary time to complete key assignments and relatedtasks on schedule.ResponsibilitiesManage FairVote Social Media Channels (80%)
Manage messaging and stories shared across social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, etc.)
Create content for FairVote’s social media platforms, including both proactive and reactive posts
Respond to real-time inquiries about FairVote or electoral reforms on social media channels
Increase supporter engagement: communicate on stories with the goal of deepening identity and involvement of supporters of ranked choice voting
Support the Communications Department and other departments in the use of these channels, from strategic advice to implementation of best practices
Track online and traditional media to capture key stories in real time, with the goal of responding to stories quickly and strategically online
Track metrics across social channels to ensure FairVote’s online voice is consistent and strategic
Support both qualitative and quantitative audits of social channels
Manage relationships with social media content creators at ally organizations to improve their own work and messaging
Support Communications Department (20%)
Support the Communications Department in promoting a consistent brand and voice across the organization
Track and maintain analysis of online thought leaders and target audiences and identify opportunities to engage them on ranked choice voting
Populate internal editorial calendar, including key stories captured through media monitoring, and elevate strategic stories/developments
Create and disseminate key graphics and videos for the organization, ensuring messages are consistent with overall communications strategy and talking points
Advise on social media marketing strategies
Provide occasional trainings and guidance to FairVote staff on the best ways to improve their own use of social media
Edit various outbound FairVote materials, including reports, studies, media resources, blog posts, and websites.
Draft and publish approximately one blog post each week in response to breaking news or ranked choice voting trends.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in communications, public relations, political science, etc.
2-3 years of increasingly responsible experience in positions relevant to social media engagement
1-2 years of documented experience managing corporate/advocacy accounts across the following social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn
1-2 years of experience creating powerful, accessible, and strategic digital content, including graphics and videos
Documented experience advocating for electoral reforms, particularly ranked choice voting
