Civil Rights Data Science Impact Fellow
CIVIL RIGHTS DATA SCIENCE FELLOW
APPLICATION CLOSES ON NOVEMBER 30, 2022 AT 12:00PM ET.
Washington D.C. – Full-Time – Remote
ABOUT THE POSITION
The FAS Talent Hub is seeking a Fellow for a one-year term (with potential opportunity to extend) to join the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC) team within the U.S. Department of Education. The Fellow will have the opportunity to pursue research related to educational equity issues and OCR’s enforcement of laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, color, and national origin, sex, and disability.
The Department’s Office for Civil Rights administers the CRDC, a mandatory biennial survey of our nation’s schools. It collects data on key education and civil rights issues from a universe of public schools in the 50 states, Washington, DC, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The data collected includes student enrollment and education programs and services, which are primarily disaggregated by race/ethnicity, sex, English Learner status, and disability. The CRDC is used by OCR to help ensure that recipients of the Department’s federal financial assistance do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, and national origin, sex, and disability. The CRDC is also a valuable resource for other Department of Education offices and federal agencies, policymakers and researchers, educators and school officials, parents and students, and the public who seek data on student opportunity and equity. The Fellow will work with the CRDC Team Leader to identify and develop research topics for publication.
OCR’s CRDC team seeks a Civil Rights Data Fellow with the requisite educational skills and experience who can focus on OCR’s priority projects relating to the CRDC, engage in analytics, produce data visualizations, and provide OCR leadership with data-driven insights to help solve complex problems and improve the CRDC. Fellows will have the opportunity to pursue original research relating to educational equity issues and OCR’s enforcement of laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, color and national origin, sex, and disability.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
The Fellow will have an opportunity to work alongside experienced and dedicated CRDC statisticians and other OCR and Department staff and will research questions including, but not limited to:
An assessment of data quality (the CRDC collects data on a broad range of topics, including student discipline, school staff, retention, course-taking, and enrollment);
An assessment and evaluation of missing data and submission system errors and warnings;
