    The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is working to develop and implement innovative and actionable ideas in science and technology policy, as well as working to build the capacity to provide support to government agencies in onboarding scientific and technical talent. We are seeking an entrepreneurial, ambitious, and resourceful individual to serve as a Science Policy Program Associate. This position will be part of the FAS Science Policy Team, supporting all aspects of the team’s work, including the Day One Project and other initiatives, in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment. This is an early career position with an opportunity for growth. The right candidate will help shape the role according to their skills, and act as a key player toward achieving significant impact on all activities and deliverables.

    Primary Functions & Responsibilities:

    • Support the organization and delivery of Day One Project policy accelerators to engage a broader community in strategic policy development in science policy and related areas;
    • Executing a successful policy accelerator requires policy acumen and an ability to diagnose opportunities to leverage ideas, along with effective project management, verbal and written communication, and skills in coaching contributors to refine their ideas. 
    • Conduct issue area and policy research to ground truth feasibility of proposed ideas, including talking with experts in the field.
    • Support the proposal development process to ensure effective communication with contributors.
    • Manage the design, execution, and delivery of workshops, roundtables, summits, and other events aimed at advancing core policy areas.
    • Produce written communication to drive processes forward
    • Contribute to the development of curricula and training materials for policy entrepreneurship skill-building activities.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    Desired Experience & Strengths:

    • 3- 5 years minimum of demonstrated work experience

    • Entrepreneurial, comfortable in a start-up environment.

    • Experience with and/or understanding of innovation and design methods to solve public or social challenges

    • Experience in building project plans and execute against outcomes including taking a deliverable and breaking it down into multiple tasks to support execution

    • Understanding of various project management methodologies including Agile, Waterfall, Asana, etc. 

    • Ability to work and support multiple functions across a dynamic team and engaging multiple parts of the organization

    • Demonstration of abilities to execute against a project plan 

    • Knowledge and experience using spreadsheets and slides, and writing emails and documents to support the successful advancement and implementation of policies and processes in and outside of government

    • Exceptional face-to-face, phone, and written communication skills

    • Motivated self-starter who values learning.

    • Contributes as part of a team and thrives in a collaborative environment.

    • Ability to work independently, set priorities and handle multiple issues at the same time.

    • High level of integrity, professionalism including teamwork and ability to deliver within short deadlines, work under pressure and multi-tasking skills.
