    Job Description

    The Volunteer Coordinator performs administrative and logistics duties within the volunteer department in support of Feeding San Diego’s (FSD) overall mission of ending hunger in the community. This is accomplished by focusing on the recruiting, supervision, and retention of volunteers to assist with operational needs. Imperative to this role is a positive attitude, strong interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to interact with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.  The Volunteer Coordinator may be required to complete other tasks as assigned by the Volunteer Manager in support of Feeding San Diego’s mission.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The majority of this role is administrative and will encompass scheduling volunteer groups, answering emails, and organizing outreach events. However, at least 1 day per week will be spent running volunteer shifts in our warehouse. The main tasks are listed below.

    VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT

    • Identify, schedule, and attend outreach events that increases the visibility of FSD’s mission and shares information about all that FSD does.
    • Coordinate volunteer ambassadors who will represent FSD at community events.
    • Communicate with volunteers, staff, and community partners to encourage donations of time, food, funds, and voice.
    • Assist with daily volunteer communications via email and telephone.
    • Ensure all volunteers have an engaging, safe and fun volunteer shift.
    • Speak to large groups (100+) while describing the organization and teaching a process, give tours, and work/engage with volunteers during the volunteer project.
    • Assist in planning, set up, volunteer management, and clean-up of recognition activities and special events.
    • Establish and maintain exemplary interactions with volunteers, donors, partner organizations, vendors, and coworkers.

    VOLUNTEER PROJECT LOGISTICS

    • Set up, coordinate, and clean up assigned volunteer projects.
    • Speak to large groups, give tours, and work/engage with volunteers during the volunteer project.
    • Create pallet tags for all volunteer projects.
    • Provide weekly communication to Operations and Programs staff regarding volunteer project information.
    • Work with Programs and Operations departments to ensure project completion and accuracy.
    • Manage productivity tracking of volunteers.
    • Ensure all volunteer areas are compliant with FDA cGMP and OSHA standards, and Feeding San Diego Standard Operating Procedures for personal safety, food safety, and cleanliness at the end of each volunteer shift.

    INTERACTION The Volunteer Coordinator will interact closely with individuals from the Operations and Programs departments, as well as a diverse cross section of volunteer participants from the community.

    EDUCATION/YEARS EXPERIENCE

    REQUIRED

    ·         High school diploma/GED ·         Previous experience working with the community ·         Demonstrated success training, organizing, or coaching large groups in a specific skill (or equivalent) ·         Moderate level computer skills: email, internet search engines, word processing and spreadsheet software ·         Experience entering data into a database

     

    PREFERRED

    ·         Bachelor’s degree ·         Two years of experience working in the non-profit sector ·         Two years of experience working with the community ·         Two years of experience attending/organizing events ·         Food Safety training ·         Experience using warehouse equipment
