SOUTHWEST CONSERVATION CORPS’ MISSION 

It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: 

Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ intern team and help the National Park Service carry out its mission to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.

The Branch of Interpretation and Visitor Services advances the agency's mission by providing memorable educational and recreational experiences that will help the public understand the meaning and relevance of park resources and foster development of a sense of stewardship. Visitor activities focus on understanding the significance of the park's resources while also facilitating connections with the resource during formal and informal ranger programs. A huge part of a visitor's experience is to receive accurate and timely information to safely enjoy and experience their national parks. Visitors can interact with information to enhance their understanding and their experience through websites, park films, kiosks, attending ranger programs, visiting visitor centers and contact stations, and purchasing resource materials at park stores.

Great Sand Dunes has significantly increased in visitation over the last 5 years. Annually, the park welcomes approximately 500,000 visitors, the majority visiting during the late spring, summer, and early fall seasons. These internships will provide opportunities for candidates to work alongside park rangers to create short resource presentations for visitors a high visitor use areas while also providing park information at the park visitor center. 

The interns will help manage congestion and contribute to the education and interpretation goals of the park. Conservation interns will assist the park in developing a suite of public presentations, create engaging special programs and events for the spring and summer season, and support the visitor center desk through orientation and trip planning. Specific work plan activities include:

Assist the park with press releases, publication reviews, and organizing and recording park statistics

Assist at the park's visitor center

Manage the special programs, such as the wheelchair program

Keep trail guides and other trail resources up to date and well stocked

The interns will be trained in the following:

• Risk management and safety
• Use of any tools used to safely complete their daily tasks
• Overview of the National Park Service
• Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve policies and regulations
• Vehicle use
• Public presentation techniques
• Resource knowledge: geology, biology, and cultural history
• Environmental Education program techniques
• Resume building, job applications, and professional interview processes

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:  

The  successful  applicant  must  be  self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping.  Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.
