Bancroft Construction Services provides environmental compliance, biological monitoring, and construction support services for public and private infrastructure projects. Our team works closely with construction managers, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure projects are completed efficiently while maintaining full compliance with environmental permits and regulations.

We are seeking qualified variable on-call Field Archaeologists to support cultural resource compliance during active construction projects. This position plays a key role in monitoring ground-disturbing activities, protecting cultural resources, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations while working collaboratively with construction and environmental teams in dynamic field settings.

This is a project-based position with variable part-time hours depending on project needs. Scheduled hours are dependent on project approvals through the project agency.

Position Summary

The Field Archaeologist will provide on-site cultural resource monitoring and compliance support during active construction activities. The position involves monitoring ground-disturbing work, identifying and documenting archaeological resources, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local cultural resource regulations and permit conditions.

The Field Archaeologist works closely with construction personnel, project managers, and cultural resources leads to implement avoidance measures, respond to discoveries, and support uninterrupted project progress while maintaining regulatory compliance. This role requires independent field judgment, clear communication, and the ability to work safely in active construction environments

The position requires the ability to work independently in the field, communicate effectively with construction personnel and project managers, and make sound, real-time decisions to maintain regulatory compliance.

**Duties & Responsibilities **

• Monitor ground-disturbing construction activities for potential cultural resource discoveries
• Conduct archaeological monitoring during grading, trenching, excavation, and utility installation
• Identify, document, and evaluate archaeological materials, features, and isolated finds
• Implement unanticipated discovery and inadvertent finds procedures in accordance with project permits
• Coordinate in real time with construction crews, superintendents, and project managers
• Maintain compliance with cultural resource permit conditions and environmental commitments
• Complete daily monitoring logs, field notes, and photographic documentation
• Collect GPS data and accurately record field observations
• Assist with preparation of monitoring summaries, discovery documentation, and technical memoranda
• Communicate findings, compliance concerns, and work status to project managers and senior archaeologists
• Participate in construction worker cultural resource awareness briefings as needed
• Support coordination with Native American tribal monitors, when applicable
• Perform additional field or office support tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field
• Minimum of 2–3 years of professional experience in archaeological fieldwork or cultural resource monitoring
• Experience monitoring construction or infrastructure projects
• Working knowledge of CEQA, NEPA, and cultural resource compliance requirements
• Ability to identify basic prehistoric and historic-period archaeological materials
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
• Ability to work safely in active construction environments and outdoor field conditions

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field
• Experience with Southern California cultural resources and regional archaeology
• Familiarity with Section 106, NHPA, and local agency permitting requirements
• Experience working alongside Native American tribal monitors and understanding consultation protocols
• Experience using GPS units, Survey123, ArcGIS, or similar field data collection tools
• Experience preparing technical reports, monitoring summaries, or discovery documentation
• OSHA 10- or 30-hour construction safety training

Work Environment

This position is field-intensive and may involve:

• Long hours in outdoor environments and temperature extremes
• Walking or hiking on uneven terrain while carrying field equipment
• Working in active construction sites around heavy equipment
• Occasional travel throughout Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego Counties
• Candidates must be physically capable of performing required field duties safely.

Pay: Hourly Rate: $26 -41/hr. This position is not benefit-eligible

• Pay range for 0-2 years of Field Archeology experience $26-34/hr.
• Pay range for 2-3 years of Field Archeology experience $35-41/hr.
