Position Overview
We are seeking a Field Inspector II – Mechanical to perform advanced site inspections and quality verification of mechanical installations. This role requires hands-on experience with building mechanical systems, the ability to interpret technical specifications and codes, and confidence in coordinating with QA/QC, Trade Leads, and commissioning teams.
The position functionally reports to the QC Engineer and administratively to the Trade Team Lead , ensuring full alignment between project execution and quality assurance.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct and document inspections for HVAC systems, hydronic piping, pumps, chillers, boilers, heat exchangers, air terminals, and ductwork to ensure compliance with design, code, and quality standards.
- Review and verify IFC drawings, shop drawings, and submittals ; identify deviations and coordinate corrective actions.
- Enforce compliance with IMC, IBC, ASME (B31.1/B31.3), SMACNA, ASHRAE , and applicable Texan local codes, ICC/IBC, and ASTM standards.
- Perform or witness pressure tests, flow balancing, flushing, and equipment start-up activities in coordination with TAB and commissioning teams.
- Ensure proper implementation of Quality Plans, ITPs, MMRs, and Inspection Requests (IRs) , maintaining accurate inspection logs, daily reports, and photographic records.
- Attend daily “ flex and stretch ” and coordination meetings with GC and trade partners to anticipate progress, address potential delays, and resolve quality issues proactively.
- Identify, record, and follow up on Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and ensure timely closure in coordination with QA/QC and construction teams.
- Verify installation quality of underground and above-ground mechanical systems , including chilled water, sanitary, domestic, HVAC, and firefighting piping networks.
- Support commissioning and integrated testing of mechanical systems; coordinate with other disciplines for joint inspections.
- Review as-built documentation for completeness and accuracy prior to system turnover.
- Mentor Field Inspector I staff and assist QA/QC Engineers in audits and client or third-party inspections.
- Promote safe work practices and compliance with OSHA 30 and site safety regulations during all inspection activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical diploma.
- 3–7 years of mechanical inspection or QA/QC experience in large-scale construction, industrial, or data center projects.
- Strong understanding of mechanical codes, standards, and installation practices.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret design specifications, submittals, and technical data sheets.
- Excellent documentation, reporting, and communication skills; able to represent QA/QC at site coordination meetings.
- Physically fit to perform site duties, including inspections at height, in mechanical rooms, and active construction environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety credential.
- Experience participating in commissioning and performance testing phases.
- Working knowledge of NFPA, ASHRAE, SMACNA, ICC, and ASTM standards.
- Proven ability to manage punch list closeouts, NCR tracking, and ITP execution autonomously.
- Relevant professional certifications such as ISO 9001, ICC, HVACR, or CWI are advantageous.
