Financial Accountant
Independence Community College is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Financial Accountant to join our team. As part of our rural, Midwest community college, you will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring compliance with institutional policies and governmental regulations. Position Overview
The Financial Accountant is responsible for the preparation of accounting financials based on accounting principles at Independence Community College. The Financial Accountant is a member of the Business Office and reports to the Assistant Vice President – Business Affairs. This position involves the collection and input of information and data necessary for accurate financials and reporting to the Assistant Vice President – Business Affairs at Independence Community College. The duties are generally performed in a standard work week timeframe, but may require non-traditional work hours such as evenings, weekends and holidays.
Position Details
This is a full-time, 12-month, salaried, exempt position. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications (minimum salary $50,000).
Current Work Schedule: 8-hour shift; Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; one-hour lunch
· Starting in January 2025, regular work schedule will be Monday – Thursday 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch and ½ workday on Friday (8 a.m. – noon)
· Summer Schedule (May 19th – August 1st): Monday – Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., ½ hour lunch and Friday’s off

Primary Responsibilities
Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to ensure accuracy and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
Manage and reconcile accounts, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
Assist in the development and monitoring of budgets, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate audits and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees and governmental agencies.
Analyze financial information to provide recommendations to the administration for improving financial performance and forecasting.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
Provide financial data support for grant applications and reporting.
Collaborate with other departments to streamline financial processes and improve operational efficiency.
Assist in the preparation of tax filings and other compliance documentation.
Publish financial statements on a monthly basis.
Conduct month-end and year-end close processes.
Develop periodic reports for management, as requested.
Complete monthly bank reconciliation by the 15th of the subsequent month.
Keep up with financial policies, regulations, changes.
Train and use Ellucian Colleague and Intuit QuickBooks software proficiently.
Record ACH payments/deposits on a monthly basis.
Create and input journal entries for the Business Office and other campus departments.
Set-up and assess student charges on student accounts.
Import bookstore, library, meal charges, and other various charges to student accounts.
Assist with reconciling Federal funds.
Assist with filing and record retention.
Make best-practices recommendations to the Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs.
Furnish documentation and assist with the completion of the annual financial audit.
Assist with the creation and management of BOT financial reports and business intelligence dashboards.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities

Cooperate with other college departments in gathering or submitting data.
Assist in maintaining a system of records to respond to program review findings or other issues, as required.
Ensure timeliness of reports and communications.
High degree of ethical standards, including adherence to general rules for safety and procedures.
A commitment to high professional standards, including professional growth.
Monitor college-related electronic and social media.
Utilize professional judgment when necessary to provide the best customer service possible to all students and to maintain a high level of confidence.
Requires knowledge to accomplish comprehensive tasks utilizing established policies and procedures.
Answer phone calls when not working with students and respond to phone messages and e-mail within 24 hours period.
Supervise student employees as available.
Act as an ambassador for the college, helping it to maintain and promote a positive reputation in the community.
Required Qualifications
· Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
· Experience: 2+ years of experience in accounting or a similar role, education and/or fund accounting experience, preferred.
· Strong knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and fund accounting.
· Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Banner, Colleague or similar ERP systems).
· Strong Excel skills, including knowledge of advanced formulas and functions.
· Strong knowledge of financial regulations, including federal, state, and local laws and guidelines.
