TITLE: Payroll and Benefits Specialist
REPORTS TO: AVP, HR
LOCATION: In-office position available in Muncie (2900 N Oakwood Ave) or Indianapolis office (7101 E 56th St.) - Hybrid option after training.
DEPARTMENT: Human Resources
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
Full-time 4-day work week or part-time option.
What success looks like in the first 3 months:
PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this position is to provide excellent service to our internal members and inspire financial wellness. The position must deliver high quality service to internal members by supporting and promoting our values to Care, Listen, Learn, Solve, and Act.
The Payroll and Benefits Specialist is responsible for administering the areas of payroll and benefits including direct involvement in supporting both employees' experience and credit union’s strategic plan. This position will assist with the planning, design, implementation and administration of payroll and benefits programs that attract, retain, motivate and reward employees while ensuring governmental compliance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Ensure accurate processing of payroll, provide timely and accurate financial information, and participate in data entry payroll processing. Maintains all payroll records, ensuring records are kept according to state and federal retention standards. Responsible for ongoing administration of the credit union’s payroll, time and attendance and human resources information systems. Ensures credit union complies in administration of our employee payroll functions and benefits programs
• Prior to initiating payroll, makes all salary adjustments and reviews time sheets for accuracy in accordance with the credit union’s leave policies. Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
• Benefits administrator for health/dental/vision/life/disability/HSA and section 125 insurance plans. Conducts analysis of benefit programs and ensures compliance with national and local legal and tax requirements pertaining to all applicable benefit plans and prepares and files reports
• Answers employee's questions regarding the various plans. Provides information and assists employees with questions related to payroll, benefit enrollment, eligibility, plan features, provisions, and other matters related to compensation and benefits.
• Ensures that any updates and/or changes to the plans are communicated to employees. Assists in the preparation of the employee benefits guide. Updates systems and documents with current benefits information
• Responsible for providing monthly reports to Senior Management derived from the Human Resource Information Systems
• Reviews and processes monthly billings for the various employee benefit plans and calculate monthly general ledger entries of insurance for accounting per department.
• Online enrollments and status changes processed regularly for various benefit plans. Other enrollments meetings are scheduled as necessary
• Back-up Coordinator for Family Medical Leave (FMLA) and Worker's Compensation
• Coordinate with accounting department to review and resolve payroll and benefit related discrepancies
• Administers credit union responsibilities for employee 401k/Profit Sharing plan to include completion of online or physical enrollment forms, coordination of training for new enrollees, timely transmittal of employee deferrals and employer match contributions. Provides information upon request to the 401k/Profit Sharing Plan Third Party Administrator
• Assists in the preparation of the 401k/Profit Sharing Plan annual audit
• Works on special projects and other duties as assigned
REQUIRED BACKGROUND:
• A high school degree or equivalent. Two-year degree preferred. Certified Payroll Professional or Certified Compensation Professional plus.
• One to three years of similar or related experience, including preparatory experience.
• Experience in using ADP , or another HRIS/ payroll processing software Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products
• Must possess a general knowledge of federal, state and local employment, wage and salary laws and regulations to include such areas as Equal Employment Opportunity, FMLA, Workers Compensation, Affirmative Action, and COBRA
• Must be able to show patience, diplomacy and tact when communicating
• Must be organized, accurate and attentive to detail. Be able to stay calm in stressful situations
• Must have the ability to maintain strict confidentiality in all matters involving the personnel activity of the Credit Union
ADA REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
Working Conditions
Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.

Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence.
