Job Description
ROLE: Head of Programming
ORGANIZATION: First Generation Investors
ORGANIZATION TYPE: Non-profit
ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
First Generation Investors (“FGI”) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that teaches high school students in underserved communities about long-term investing and provides the students with real money to invest. Throughout the 8-session program, high school students learn the basics of personal finance and investing, and are ultimately provided $100 in real funds to create their own portfolio.
FGI was founded in 2018 at the University of Pennsylvania by Dylan Ingerman, Cole Mattox, and Alex Ingerman. They felt fortunate that they learned about investing from a young age and were eager to share their experiences with others. To do so, they began researching financial literacy and why many programs historically were unsuccessful. Ultimately, they identified 3 essential themes for successful financial literacy programs: community, education, and resources.
With this in mind, they designed FGI as a program to enroll college-aged volunteers as tutors to teach high-school students in underserved communities financial literacy (with a focus on investing), bringing classroom lessons to life by providing students with real money to invest. Today, FGI operates on 35+ college campuses, has taught over 500 high school students, and has over 300 volunteers.
