Peninsula Community Center, a ministry of Peninsula Covenant Church (PCC), builds community by providing personal, healthy and meaningful connection through aquatics, fitness, tennis and community programming. PCC is a vibrant and forward-thinking church located in Redwood City, dedicated to serving our community and making a positive impact through our outreach programs including our Community Center. PCC employs over 150 seasonal and part-time staff to support various community efforts. PRINCIPLE OBJECTIVE
Under the supervision of the Fitness Director, the Fitness Instructor leads group fitness classes, educates Center members and staff on proper exercise techniques and safety, and ensures a positive, safe, and engaging environment for all participants. This role also supports the overall Fitness Program by upholding a standard of excellence and demonstrating a commitment to ongoing personal growth.
PRINCIPLE WORKING RELATIONSHIP
This role collaborates with the Fitness Director and works closely with other fitness instructors, personal trainers, and member care staff to ensure a consistent and positive member experience. This role interacts with members and class participants, providing guidance, motivation, and support in a welcoming and professional manner and collaborates with program staff and facility management to maintain a safe, clean, and engaging fitness environment that reflects the organization’s mission and values.
SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead safe, effective, and engaging group fitness classes with proper warm-up, workout, and cool down.
Instruct and motivate participants using correct form, technique, and exercise modifications.
Prepare class equipment, music, and materials; maintain high energy and professionalism.
Apply fitness knowledge to support members, ensure safety, and uphold facility standards.
Communicate with the Fitness Director regarding member feedback and program needs.
Collaborate with staff to develop creative, high-quality classes and enhance member experience.
PROFILE SKILLS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
Energetic, motivational instructor committed to creating a safe and inclusive class environment
Strong knowledge of anatomy, exercise science, and group fitness techniques
Excellent communication and leadership skills; able to engage and inspire participants
Professional, reliable, and team-oriented with a positive attitude
Skilled in class design, music selection, and providing modifications for all fitness levels
Committed to safety, continuous learning, and supporting the mission of community wellness
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
Minimum of 1 year of experience as a fitness instructor, group exercise leader, or personal trainer preferred.
Current fitness certifications (e.g., ACE, NASM, SCW, or equivalent) depending on the style of class being taught.
Minimum age: 18 years or older.
Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, or a related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to lift up to 30+ pounds occasionally and 15-20 pounds frequently.
DOJ background clearance required
Must adhere to and model PCC’s Safe Church policies
Position requires physical ability to demonstrate exercises, lift light to moderate weights, and remain active for extended periods during classes.
WORKWEEK
This is a Part-time position with an average of 1-4 hours per week
Requires flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as needed
