    Job Title: Fitter

    JOB PURPOSE

    Fitters are responsible for preparing metal parts for welding, by utilizing supplied blueprints, diagrams, other work instructions to physically lay-out and secure components of fabricated assemblies together. The Fitter will work in a skilled team alongside welders, fitters, and fabrication assistants, with each team headed by a Fabrication Foreman, to whom all assigned team-members will directly report. The workpieces to be welded are typically first laid-out by Fitters, aided by Fabrication Assistants, and then joined together by the Welder.

    Note: There are different categories (ex: Structural, Pipe) and tiered classifications (i.e., Levels I-IV) within the job title of Fitter. However, this does not reflect a change in overall job duties listed below.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITY SUMMARY

    • Receive specific work instructions as assigned from Fabrication Foreman.

    • Follows work instructions, blueprints/drawings, or other specifications and performs the indicated and assigned fitting of components.

    • Verify conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.

    • Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.

    • Move parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.

    • Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.

    • Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences.

    • Lay out and examine metal stock or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.

    • Tack-weld fitted parts together.

    • Lift or move materials and finished products, using large cranes.

    • Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.

    • Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.

    • Locate and mark workpiece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.

    • Design and construct templates and fixtures, using hand tools.

    • Hammer, chip, and grind workpieces to cut, bend, and straighten metal.

    • Straighten warped or bent parts, using sledges, hand torches, or straightening presses.

    • Smooth workpiece edges and fix taps, tubes, and valves.

    • Preheat workpieces to make them malleable, using hand torches or furnaces.

    • Heat-treat parts, using acetylene torches.

    • Maintains high standard of professionalism, personal hygiene, and housekeeping within their designated work areas.

    • Works in tandem with other teammates commonly (Welders, Fabrication Assistants, other fitters) and provides assistance to team members whenever possible.

    • Verifies equipment and materials provided by MYER are in good working order and per specification and notifies Fabrication Foreman if there are any defects or issues with the equipment, materials, or anything else that could possibly be considered unsafe or could cause the quality of work performed to be inadequate to company standards.

    • Always makes sure that work is performed in the safest and most efficient manner as possible and provides input to Fabrication Foreman for recommendations toward continual improvement.

    • Performs other related duties as assigned by Fabrication Foreman, Fabrication Manager, Production Manager, Operations Manager, General Manager, or member of MYER Companies Executive Board.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

    Education

    • High school diploma or GED, preferred.

    • Training from a vocation school or previous employer in the use of the application tools and in the application techniques, preferred.

    • The ability to successfully complete training programs provided by MYER after recruitment.

    Licensure/Credentials

    • Must pass a written skills assessment and hands-on test prior to hire.

    Experience

    • Minimum of 3 years in work-related experience in fitting or fabrication, highly preferred.

    Special Knowledge/Skills

    • Blue-print reading of fabricated metal products, including welding and machining symbols.

    • Familiarity of common metal fabrication and welding methods.

    • Must be able to read and derive measurements, dimensions, and quantity of material needed to fabricate a structure.

    • Ability to read and interpret weld and welding symbols

    • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and with a diverse team.

    • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and good safety practices

    • Ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.

    • Must have a strong drive for personal and professional growth.

    Physical Requirements

    • Vision: adequate to enter and read printed material. Able to identify markings and digital outputs on calibrated tools. Able to identify individuals to initiate greetings, the giving of directions and other business interactions.

    • Hearing: able to hear sufficiently to engage in conversation. Able to hear safety alerts and warning signals.

    • Speaking: able to engage in conversations in person and deliver information to groups of varying size with or without amplification.

    • Equipment Operation: Able to operate a wide range of tools and equipment including but not limited to arc welding equipment, oxy-fuel cutting equipment, angle grinder, die grinder, air chisel, overhead crane, jib crane.

    • Carrying: able to occasionally carry up to 50lbs.

    • Confined Space: able to enter and exit within a confined space for various lengths of time.

    • Heights: able to work at heights of approximately up to 15 feet on various types of platforms and lifts for various lengths of time

    • Lifting: able to occasionally lift up to 50lbs.

    • Pushing/Pulling: able to push/pull items on shop floor.

    • Sitting: able to sit for extended periods of time.

    • Squatting/Kneeling: able to occasionally squat or kneel to retrieve or handle items.

    • Standing: able to stand for extended periods of time.

    • Walking: able to walk through production areas, around machinery and equipment sometimes on uneven indoor or outdoor surfaces.
