    Job Description

    Professional English Language Support (PELS) program pilot housed in the University Center for Excellence in Writing (UCEW) RANK: Instructor Teaching technical and academic writing and speaking courses to multilingual and multidialectical engineering graduate and professional students and contributing to new PELS pilot program. The University Center for Excellence in Writing (UCEW) in which the PELS pilot is housed is a comprehensive writing program serving students at all levels and colleges at Florida Atlantic University. The PELS pilot focuses on writing and speaking support for multilingual and multidialectical graduate and professional students. This position is a non-tenure earning appointment on nine-month renewable contracts, with additional summer teaching if funding is available. Teaching load is 4/4. DUTIES: Primary responsibilities will be teaching courses focused on further developing students’ academic writing, specializing in thesis and dissertation writing, but also including presentation skills, and conversational English as well as conferencing with students. The position will work with a cohort of engineering students and a cohort university-wide. Depending on interest and expertise, the position may include individual student consulting, training peer consultants, and facilitating faculty development or assessment of student learning or program effectiveness. This non-tenure track, position reports to the UCEW Director and PELS Assistant Director. The position begins January 5, 2023. Minimum Qualifications: PhD preferred but not required. Experience teaching academic writing, technical writing, and speaking to international, multilingual, and multidialectal graduate students is essential. A background in TESOL and writing studies is required. Candidates may apply from any field of study, particularly applied linguistics, technical/professional writing, or composition-rhetoric. Desired areas of specialty: English for academic purposes, writing in the disciplines, science writing, second language writing pedagogy.
