    RESEARCH SPECIALIST II Berkeley, CA

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an independent, ever-evolving philanthropy that supports basic biomedical scientists and educators with the potential for transformative impact. We make long-term investments in people, not just projects, because WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF INDIVIDUALS TO MAKE BREAKTHROUGHS OVER TIME. HHMI scientists have radically advanced the understanding of cells, the brain, the immune system, the development of organs, and how to treat many diseases. Founded in 1953 by aviator and industrialist Howard R. Hughes, HHMI is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and employs more than 2,500 people across the U.S.

At HHMI, you are not just an employee – you are a part of a creative and talented team with colleagues whose expertise ranges from biomedical research to investment management, from information technology to law. We encourage collaborative and results-driven working styles and offer an adaptable environment WHERE EMPLOYEES CAN FUNCTION AT THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL. As HHMI scientists continue to push boundaries in laboratories and classrooms, you can be sure that your contributions while working at HHMI are making a difference.

JOB SUMMARY: We have an opportunity for a RESEARCH SPECIALIST II to join the laboratory of Dr. Barbara Meyer on-site at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, CA. The Meyer laboratory carries out pioneering research on the mechanisms of cell-fate determination, the role of chromosome structure and chromatin modification in gene regulation, and the molecular evolution of chromosome-wide mechanisms of gene control in the nematode C. elegans, with a major emphasis on X-chromosome dosage compensation. Approaches include genetics, genomics, single-molecule imaging, and structural studies including X-ray crystallography. More information about the Meyer lab can be found here: http://mcb.berkeley.edu/labs/meyer/index.html

We are looking for a passionate, solution-driven scientist who enjoys the excitement of a world-class scientific laboratory and welcomes the challenge of an energetic environment that maintains a strong commitment to collegiality and teaching. The Research Specialist II will perform independent research involving high-resolution, single-molecule imaging as well as genetics and genomics approaches requiring excellent application of professional judgment, interpretation of experimental results, innovation of new approaches, and preparation of research for presentation and publication.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Perform genetic, molecular, genomic, and single-molecule experiments and analysis (including CRISPR-mediated genome editing, ChIP-qPCR, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, Hi-C, and single-molecule imaging) for research projects.

    • Identify methodological problems in research protocols and assist in implementing modifications to optimize experimental results.

    • Use software applications to analyze Illumina and other high-throughput data and assist others in data analysis.

    • Prepare and present written or oral progress reports, including assembly, organization, and interpretation of data.

    • Train others in complex technical protocols.

    • Conduct literature reviews to determine suitable research methods.

    • Operate and help maintain common lab equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS: • Ph.D. in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Computational Biology, or Biochemistry is required.

    • At least 2-5 years of post-doctoral research experience is strongly preferred.

    • Experience with bio-informatics.

    • In-depth knowledge of molecular biology and genetics.

    • Ability to make sound decisions based on knowledge and experience.

    • Ability to make research presentations and draft research manuscripts.

    • Ability to review data and information critically.

    • Ability to develop innovative procedures to achieve goals.
