    RESEARCH TECHNICIAN I Berkeley, CA

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an independent, ever-evolving philanthropy that supports basic biomedical scientists and educators with the potential for transformative impact. We make long-term investments in people, not just projects, because WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF INDIVIDUALS TO MAKE BREAKTHROUGHS OVER TIME. HHMI scientists have radically advanced the understanding of cells, the brain, the immune system, the development of organs, and how to treat many diseases. Founded in 1953 by aviator and industrialist Howard R. Hughes, HHMI is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and employs more than 2,500 people across the U.S.

At HHMI, you are not just an employee – you are a part of a creative and talented team with colleagues whose expertise ranges from biomedical research to investment management, from information technology to law. We encourage collaborative and results-driven working styles and offer an adaptable environment where employees can function at their highest level. As HHMI scientists continue to push boundaries in laboratories and classrooms, you can be sure that your contributions while working at HHMI are making a difference.

We are currently looking for a RESEARCH TECHNICIAN I to support the lab of DR. NICOLE KING at the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, CA. The King lab is a collaborative, project-driven environment composed of talented scientists whose research focuses on choanoflagellates, the closest living relative of animals, to reconstruct animal origins and investigate molecular mechanisms underlying host-microbe interactions. To better understand the origin and evolution of animals, the King lab is reconstructing the minimal genomic complexity of the unicellular progenitors of animals, elucidating the ancestral functions of genes required for animal development, and characterizing choanoflagellate cell and developmental biology. More information about the lab can be found here: https://kinglab.berkeley.edu/

The ideal candidate is an ambitious, motivated, and highly detail-oriented individual who is excited to assist with developing genetics and genome editing projects in the emerging model choanoflagellate species S. rosetta.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Apply molecular biology methods to study choanoflagellate biology • Prepare DNA and RNA for gene delivery • Prepare libraries for next-generation sequencing • Culture choanoflagellate cells and bacteria using sterile technique • Keep meticulous laboratory records • Participate in weekly laboratory meetings and planning sessions • Stay up-to-date on literature relevant to research areas as required • Assist King lab members with a variety of cellular and molecular biology techniques and other ongoing laboratory projects • Assist with other support duties relating to lab management and operations as required

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience • Bachelor’s degree in biology, bioengineering, or a related field is required • Master’s degree would be a plus • At least one year of experience (including honors thesis research) working in a laboratory setting

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Knowledge of fundamental principles of genetics and molecular biology gained through coursework and prior laboratory experience • Experience with molecular biology techniques, flow cytometry, microscopy, tissue culture, and sterile techniques • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and perform a variety of new techniques • Exceptional oral and written communication skills • Exceptional organizational and record-keeping skills • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to perform complex tasks effectively and independently with general instruction • Ability to follow instruction with an eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be mentored
