    Job Description

    THE ROLE

    The Controller is a hands-on leader of all accounting and finance functions for a commercial building contractor, and is primarily responsible for providing high quality, accurate and timely information to leadership for the review of historical results, managing cashflow, operational planning, and for effective decision making. 

    This role requires a strong commitment to quality, attention to detail, an inquisitive mind, effective communication, and impeccable ethics; together with a desire to build and maintain positive relationships inside and outside the Company. 

    The position currently oversees one other member of the Accounting Team. 

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Produce timely and accurate financial reports, job cost reports and applications for payment
    • Monitor and manage accounts payable/receivable and cash disbursement/receipts functions in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices, overall best practices and Company policies, including the mitigation of payment late fees and penalties
    • Oversee payroll processing and ensure timely tax reporting and payment of payroll liabilities
    • Prepare, review and evaluate job cost information, including monthly job cost meetings with project managers, the review of backlog projections and associated revenue and gross profit projections
    • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly and year-end close
    • Manage daily cash flow and provide projections of revenue and cash flow, including the support needed to maintain legal requirements and good standing with surety, financial and lending institutions
    • Provide quality and timely monthly financial statements, analysis and supporting schedules
    • Acquire and maintain a thorough understanding of accounting and financial reporting systems, including Sage 300 (Timberline) and Procore.
    • Develop and maintain best practice policies and procedures for accounting, budgets, taxes, forecasting and financial reporting systems and processes
    • In concert with supervisor, develop, implement and consistently manage an adequate system of internal controls that provides for both the protection of assets and accurate financial reporting
    • Coordinate annual outside CPA Review of financial statements and preparation of tax returns
    • Monitor payment and compliance with all state and local business/professional licenses
    • Maintain professional relationships with vendors, subcontractors, financial institutions and other company personnel
    • Ensure sales and use tax compliance and timely reporting
    • Evaluate, research and recommend overhead saving ideas and/or more efficient programs
    • Manage, coordinate and maintain the IT vendor relationship and equipment necessary for daily business functions
    • Manage and report to supervisor regarding annual reviews for all insurance audits (including GL, W/C, etc.)
    • Perform special assignments as directed

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Construction, job-costing and billing experience (specifically for a general contractor, a plus)
    • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics or another business-related field
    • Sophisticated finance /accounting system experience; specific construction industry experience with Sage (Timberline) and Procore a plus
    • Minimum of 5 years of accounting/financial management experience
    • Solid grasp of accounting concepts (the “why’s”) and their practical application
    • Highly proficient in Excel, and solid in Word
    • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while still being a team player
    • Strong organizational, multi-tasking and time management skills
    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Analyzer, investigator, problem-solver and alternative solution finder
