    Job Summary

    The Food Service Worker is responsible for duties that contribute to preparing, setup, serving and cleaning up after meal service. The FSW provides excellent customer service and holds food safety in high regard. The Food Service Worker should be enthusiastic, willing to accept tasks and offer assistance to co-workers and perform kitchen duties as described below. The FSW follows the instructions and training of their direct supervisor.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Proactively reviews menus and prepares for the daily meals by collaborating with supervisor and co-workers on required tasks.
    2. Performs preparation duties as instructed by the chef or supervisor, including reading recipes, weighing and measuring ingredients and utilizing basic knife and cooking skills.
    3. Cleans and organizes workspaces, equipment, utensils and service lines.
    4. Responsible for serving line set up and meal service as assigned by supervisor.
    5. Serves meals, refills serving lines, or counts meals as assigned by supervisor.
    6. Cleans up all areas after meal service and reports any record keeping information to supervisor or chef.
    7. Assists co-workers as needed toward common goals for service and efficiency.
    8. Learns and follows basic NSLP guidelines, food safety and food handling procedures at all times.
    9. Follows all policies, procedures, goals and objectives of the Food Service Department.
    10. Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.
    11. Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

    Education and Related Work Experience

    • Higher consideration is given for this position for an individual with experience that would insure being able to meet and fulfill job requirements; including prior foodservice experience, especially in a school setting.

    Licenses, Registrations or Certifications

    • Required state of Illinois fingerprinting and background check
    • Valid Food Handlers Certificate within 30 days of hire

    Technical Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

    • Basic knowledge of food handling and food service operations or ability to learn.
    • Excellent customer service skills for maintaining a friendly and engaging atmosphere with students and co-workers.
    • Effective time management to ensure meals are served on schedule with each meal period.
    • Knowledge of and adherence to food safety protocols
    • Knowledge and practice of workplace safety protocols
    • Ability to accept and execute instructions on a daily basis

    Physical Demands

    • Ability to work quickly and possibly simultaneously perform a variety of tasks.
    • Ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend; mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects.
    • Ability to stand for long periods.
    • Ability to walk long distances.
    • Ability to lift, push and/or pull objects, which may approximate 50 pounds.
    • Ability to work with, and in the proximity of, equipment with moving mechanical parts.
    • Ability to work in an inside environment.
    • May be required to work around loud noise.

    Work Environment

    • Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
