    ASSISTANT LABORATORY ANIMAL TECHNICIAN

    Van Andel Institute (VAI), a leading independent biomedical research facility, is dedicated to determining the epigenetic, genetic, molecular and cellular origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases, and translating those findings into effective therapies. The Institute is home to more than 300 scientists and support staff that work in on-site laboratories and in collaborative partnerships that span the globe.

    To ensure the Institute is able to continue to provide excellent animal support for our research studies involving mice and rats, our Vivarium is seeking to hire A FULL-TIME ASSISTANT LABORATORY ANIMAL TECHNICIAN.

    As an ASSISTANT LABORATORY ANIMAL TECHNICIAN, you would be responsible for performing specialized technical procedures necessary to maintain continuous operation of our animal facility and assist in the conduct of animal experiments in support of Institute research. The primary duties you would be tasked with include:

    • Conduct breeding, care, and treatment of Mice, Rats, and Zebrafish.
    • Provide basic care and daily husbandry for the animals.
    • Observe and record physical signs of animals’ health, record data and maintain a proper living environment for test animals.
    • Maintain barrier spaces and office space with cleaned and disinfected supplies.

     

    IN THIS ROLE YOU WOULD ALSO BE EXPECTED TO:

    • Proficient in general husbandry tasks.
    • Learn general procedures, including tail clips, cauterizing, weaning, and mating.
    • Communicate with Laboratories and provide accurate information to attending veterinarian.
    • Participate in cleaning and maintenance of animal cages, rooms, and Vivarium spaces.

    Candidates should possess, at a minimum, a High School degree. An Associate’s Degree  or Bachelors degree in the Life Sciences field prefered. A AALAS ALAT (American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician) certification or better is strongly preferred.

    Required Skills Required Experience

  • Qualifications
    • Experience in system administration, database administration, network engineering, software engineering, or software development, with a concentration in Cyber Security.
    • Experience in incident detection and response, system administration, database administration, network engineering, software engineering, or software development.

    • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
    • Cisco Certified Network Associate Security (CCNA Security)

    • Experience working with senior Nuclear C3 community stakeholders such as OSD (NII), Joint Staff, and USSTRATCOM.
