    The NEA Center for Organizing seeks an Associate Director for State Affiliate Relations and Growth for Zone 1 (ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, DC and VA).  The Associate Director serves as the primary liaison between NEA and its state affiliates. The Associate Director is responsible for promoting the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the Association.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with state executive directors, state presidents and UniServ managers
    • Seeks out and promotes opportunities for mutual support among and between state affiliates
    • Assists state presidents and state executive directors in effectively working together as leadership teams; with clarity on roles and responsibilities, mutual expectations, and communications
    • Assists state affiliates in strategic planning and in advancing NEA’s mission, vision and strategic priorities – with a primary focus on membership growth and engagement
    • Serves as a point of contact for state affiliates in navigating NEA programs and support, and in advising other NEA Centers on state affiliate needs and capacities
    • Assists UniServ managers in building a culture of organizing in and through their UniServ director workforce
    • Assists in the targeting, oversight and evaluation of C4O grants and field staff support to state affiliates
    • Promotes Year Round Organizing through the Center for Organizing’s Five Foci within state affiliates: (organizing skills development; smart, routine use of data, technology & digital engagement; expanded, representative worksite leadership; net membership growth; and new educator engagement)
    • Assists in providing coaching, mentoring and support to state executive directors – especially new executive directors
    • Participates in USEDP (United State Executive Director Program) selection and evaluation; and assists, in collaboration with NEA’s Human Resources, in providing support to state affiliates in the search process for executive directors
    • Assists in annual comprehensive reviews of growth plans in Growth Focus Small States
    • Manages assigned staff, including developing and evaluating performance expectations and supporting ongoing professional development
    • Coaches and supports affiliates in the development and implementation of strategic organizing plans
    • Drives the creation of an organizing culture within NEA and its affiliates
    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree required. Relevant graduate degree and/or certification preferred.
    • Union experience at the state or national level.
    • Membership organizing experience.
    • Demonstrated personnel management expertise; the ability to delegate responsibly, prioritize work activities, monitor progress, coach towards success, and ensure accountability.
    • Leadership skills, including the ability to think strategically and facilitate dialogue for shared results.
    • Effective skills in project planning and financial management.
    • Extensive knowledge of state affiliates and the NEA.
    • Knowledge of public education.
    • Commitment to racial and social justice.
    • Ability to execute program deliverables prior to established deadlines.
    • Ability to travel extensively (approximately 100 to 120 overnights per year).
    • This position is based in Washington, DC. (Residence within Zone 1 may be considered on a case by case basis.)
