    About Us:

    The Hudson River Maritime Museum is a dynamic institution dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the maritime history of the Hudson River, its tributaries, industries and communities. Our exhibits are at the heart of our mission, and we are looking for a creative, detail-oriented, freelance Exhibit Project Manager to work with our team to create annd install compelling and immersive experiences for all visitors.

    Job Overview:

    The Freelance Exhibit Project Manager is responsible for providing assistance and partnership with existing ExhibitTeam in improving existing exhibits as well as creating new permananet and temporary exhibits. Responsabilities will include conceptual work, research, design, layout, budget management and final execution. The ideal candidate should have some experience as a project manager who can translate complex ideas into engaging, accessible exhibits. This role requires the ability to collaborate and effectively manage cross-functional teams, external partners, and project budgets to ensure exhibits are delivered on time and within scope.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Manage the planning, design, and execution of exhibit projects, including permanent, temporary, and the upgrade of existing exhibits.

    Lead cross-departmental teams, including curators, designers, educators, fabricators, and contractors.

    Develop, monitor, and maintain detailed project budgets and schedules, ensuring all projects stay on track financially and logistically.

    Work with curators and other sources to research and develop exhibit content that aligns with the institution’s mission.

    Oversee the bidding, contracting, and management of external vendors and contractors.

    Ensure all exhibits meet institutional standards for quality, accessibility, safety, and visitor engagement.

    Maintain strong communication with all stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, donors, and sponsors.

    Qualifications and Skills:

    Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies, Exhibition Design, Arts Administration, or a related field; Master's degree is a plus.

    Some experience in exhibit development, design, and production, preferably within a museum or similar cultural institution.

    Experience with successful project management, managing multi-phase projects.

    Knowledge of museum best practices, fabrication methods, and interactive technologies.

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate project plans and engage with diverse audiences.

    Leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build consensus and lead cross-functional teams.

    A passion for creating compelling educational and interpretive experiences for the public.

    Proficiency in graphic design and/or layout programs a plus.

    Compensation: Rate of pay will vary widely depending on experience; ranging from approx $30 to approx $50+ per hour.
