    Reports to:  Education Program Manager

    Pay:             $15/hour

Friends of the Children is a nonprofit that is impacting generational change by empowering youth through relationships with professional mentors. We do this by providing children facing the most obstacles with a long-term, salaried, professional mentor, who we call a “Friend,” from kindergarten through high school graduation, 12+ years – no matter what. At Friends of the Children, we put children first and use our values to change the way the world treats and views youth facing great barriers. We launched operations in Austin, TX in September of 2017. Our office is located in East Austin.

We are currently seeking Summer Interns to work directly with our Education Program Manager during the summer of 2023 to help facilitate our Literacy Book Camp. The past few years have been challenging for Texas Schools. As a result of these challenges, our children have academically regressed so that currently more than 50% are not on grade level.  Our Summer Literacy Bootcamp will ensure our most behind elementary schoolers (grades pre-K to 5) receive instruction two days per week with our Literacy Tutors. Each Literacy Tutor will work 1:1 in 45-minute sessions with each child in order to meet individual reading improvement goals. Youth will have the opportunity to participate in learning activities/crafts that support the camp's literacy goals. This is where you come in! Our interns will assist in supervision and activity rotations so that Literacy Tutors can concentrate on tutoring.
