    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Ancestral Lands Crew Leader Development Members perform many roles and are the key to our program’s success. The position is multi-faceted and demanding, but with opportunity for growth. Successful candidates will demonstrate resourcefulness, effective communication skills, excellent judgement, maturity, initiative, professionalism, and the desire to devote themselves to a crew experience where the needs of others are placed above oneself. The CLDP position requires, mentorship, patience, technical aptitude, focus on efficiency, and a high level of comfort in the outdoors. The CLDP position is intended to be a role that changes throughout the term.  CLDPs may assist crew leaders in completion of paperwork, delegating tasks to crew members, planning work days and projects, among many other leadership duties.  The position is crafted to allow the CLDP to develop their leadership through mentorship from crew leader and staff.

    PROJECT OVERVIEW:

    The Jemez District Crew will consist of 5 individuals who will assist US Forest Service staff in a variety of project work including: fencing in riparian areas, archaeological surveys, wildlife surveys, general maintenance of public use areas, etc.  The crew will have the opportunity to directly work with the Forest Service's Archaeology, Biology, Fuels, and Recreation departments to complete important conservation projects across both the Jemez and Cuba Ranger Districts.  The crew will work 40-hr work weeks, Mon-Thurs.  ALCC is a non-residential program and does not offer housing.

    Required Skills

    LEADERSHIP –  CLDP members must have experience or a strong desire to mentor a diverse group of young individuals.  CLDP members provide leadership in AL’s service programs as co-leaders and they will lead, mentor, manage, and participate in the day-to-day details of crew life at work.  Leadership duties with AL require that all crew leaders must have a clean driving record (insurable) and a current driver’s license.  IF YOU HAVE ANY MAJOR DRIVING INFRACTIONS WITHIN THE PAST 5 YEARS (I.E. DUI, DWI, ACCIDENTS, RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT, ETC.), PLEASE CHECK WITH AL TO CONFIRM WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE INSURABLE.  FINAL ACCEPTANCE DECISIONS ARE CONTINGENT UPON YOUR DRIVING RECORD.  INDIVIDUALS THAT CANNOT BE INSURED UNDER AL’S INSURANCE POLICY MAY NOT BE SELECTED FOR THIS POSITION

    CONSERVATION – Previous experience with a conservation corps is preferred but not required.  Crew projects may include, primarily, trail maintenance and construction and forestry work; additional skills that may be gained (depending on project work) include fencing, invasive species identification and eradication, stream and river restoration, habitat restoration, ecological restoration, campground improvement, and rock work.  Members will receive training and certification on the proper use of tools required to perform project work.

    CORPSMEMBER DEVELOPMENT – Previous experience as an outdoor educator and/or mentor is preferred but not required.  Must have a strong desire to teach and facilitate discussion.  CLDP must be a supportive presence and help create a developmental atmosphere for crew to pursue professional and personal goals.

     

    List of Responsibilities and Duties 

    PROJECT MANAGEMENT & IMPLEMENTATION- CLDPS WILL BE TRAINED AND EXPECTED TO DEMONSTRATE PROGRESSING ABILITY IN THE SKILLS LISTED BELOW

    • Train and motivate a crew of 4-5 young adults to efficiently complete conservation projects on public lands 

    • Delegation of project work & investment among co-leader and crew

    • Manage the on-the-ground quality and quantity of project work

    • Think critically to resolve issues and solve problems

    • Communicate effectively & coordinate logistics with project partners, co-leader, & AL staff

    LEADERSHIP & MENTORSHIP  - CLDPS WILL DEVELOP THE FOLLOWING SKILLS:

    • Manage, supervise, and lead the day-to-day details of project work.

    • Implement skills training on work-site and facilitate intentional discussions via informal lessons to contribute to the crew’s personal growth and group dynamics

    • Promote individual corps member development and a healthy community 

    • Must be willing to follow and enforce all AL policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent Ancestral Lands. This includes creating a substance free work environment, refraining from the use of tobacco products, alcohol, and drugs while involved in the program.

    SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT

    • Monitor, manage, and promote the crew’s physical and emotional safety on and off the work site

    • Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety

    • Transport crew and equipment safely in AL vehicles with trailers

     ADMINISTRATION

    *Help Crew Leader Complete professional documentation of daily and weekly reports, corps member and peer evaluations, disciplinary action forms, incident reports, etc.

     

     

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission.

    • Leadership experience with Indigenous youth or young adults.

    • Excellent organizational & communication skills

    • Strong time-management skills and ability to work independently as well as with others

    • Ability to effectively and efficiently manage all aspects of crew life and production within a 40-50-hour work week.

    • Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment

    • Willingness to learn and be a part of a dynamic community of peer leaders.

    • Must be adaptive, patient, and able to maintain a positive perspective throughout.

    • Physically fit and able to work long days in adverse conditions

    • Must be 21, have a clean driving record (insurable by AL) and a current driver’s license.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience with AL or other conservation corps or youth corps

    • Experience with experiential and/or environmental education

    • Facilitation and team-building experience with diverse groups of people

    • Strong conflict resolution skills

    • Sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to make a positive difference and promote leadership in others

     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Frequently required to walk, hike, sit and talk or listen

    • Required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms

    • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

    • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to focus

    • Required to drive an AL vehicle

    • Must be able to speak, understand, read and write English
