    HIRING SALARY:    $80,000.00 annually 

    HOURS:                    8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday; Some evenings and weekends may be required

    MAJOR FUNCTION: The Regional Civics Captain is a grant-funded position. The Regional Civic Captain supports and reinforces civics and government standards implementation, provides sustained professional learning, leads and manages Regional Civics Coaches, and contributes to the success of Florida’s priorities for civic literacy. Regional Civics Captains will report directly to the Bureau of Standards and Instructional Support (BSIS) at the (FDOE), and will work in an identified region in the state to provide targeted services and supports to schools, districts and consortium. 

    PRIMARY DUTIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 

    • Ensures program compliance with organizational, state and federal rules and regulations. Provides guidance and support for Florida’s priorities for civic literacy, including the Civic Literacy Excellence Initiative. Develops annual program monitoring activities and perform real-time monitoring and reporting requirements. Reviews data relative to the federal program and improve outcomes annually. Works collaboratively with Florida Education Foundation and the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative. Adheres to FDOE/BSIS procedures and processes concerning workflow and obtain FDOE/BSIS approval for deliverables/work (e.g., coaching logs, presentations, support plans) prior to implementation in the field. Accountable for quantitative and qualitative performance indicators aligned to student performance data and FDOE/program goals.  

    • Directs the operation and management, as well as completes timely performance appraisals, develops accurate work plans, and approves monthly attendance and leave for assigned Regional Civics Coaches. Develops logical work plans for staff that include objectives, scope and details of the expectations (tasks to be performed). Establishes and maintains a work plan for the team that reflects the goals of FDOE to meet the needs of Florida’s priorities for civic literacy. Provides coaching while maintaining detailed coaching logs and conducting evaluations of Regional Civics Coaches. Coordinates, helps develop and reviews the deliverables/work from Regional Civics Coaches, modeled by using data/evidence for professional development needs, technical assistance and requests from stakeholders.  

    • Supports and reinforces standards implementation and Florida’s priorities for civic literacy at the school, district, region, consortium, conference and statewide levels (e.g., ongoing consultation, monitoring, technical assistance, virtual and face-to-face training, resource development, classroom/site visits). Collects, analyzes and reports data to be used for program effectiveness, and ensures financial resources are aligned with the intents and purposes of the program.  

    • Develops and provides technical assistance to LEAs, schools, and other stakeholders aligned to Florida’s priorities for civic literacy. Develops and provides training and professional development at the school, district, region, consortium, conference and statewide levels.  

    • Engages in substantial travel to provide training, technical assistance and Local Educational Agency (LEA)/school site visits, as well as participate in federal program monitoring.

     

    MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or similar content and five (5) years of teaching experience with documented success of teaching civics and government. Certification in Elementary Education, Social Science 5-9 or Social Science 6-12 is preferred. Also requires three (3) years of school, district or state-based leadership experience. Preferences will be given for experience with designing professional learning specific to civics and government instruction; documented successful experience facilitating adult learning and delivering professional learning for civics and government instruction; experience mentoring, coaching, and providing oral and written feedback about instruction to classroom teachers; and leading others in a collaborative process and/or analyzing and using student achievement data for instructional purposes. 

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of educational programs and ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ability to analyze and interpret data. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and deal effectively with a wide variety of people. Ability to multi-task and work within tight time constraints. Skilled in operating personal computer software such as Microsoft Word, and Excel.

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    • At least one year of experience teaching Developmental Reading/Writing to adult learners in a college or community education setting.
