Job Overview

Position Goals
The School Nurse plays a vital role in:
Preventing illness and identifying health concerns early.
Providing care and health education to students and staff.
Collaborating with families, healthcare providers, and school staff to ensure a supportive and safe learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide nursing care and first aid to students and staff.
Administer medications and treatments as directed by healthcare providers and authorized by parents/guardians.
Maintain accurate records of health office visits, parent communications, and medication administration.
Ensure safe storage, handling, and documentation of all medications.
Monitor and maintain emergency health information for students and staff.
Develop individualized healthcare plans for students with chronic conditions or special health needs.
Act as a liaison among school personnel, families, and community healthcare providers.
Lead health and wellness initiatives to promote a safe and healthy school environment.
Monitor immunization records and ensure compliance with state requirements.
Educate students and staff on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention.
Maintain compliance with state and federal health regulations, as well as school policies.
Collaborate regularly with teachers, administrators, and support staff regarding student health concerns.
Qualifications and Experience
Current RN license to practice in Delaware.
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program.
Minimum of three years of nursing experience (pediatric, public health, or school nursing preferred).
Strong knowledge of child health issues, school health policies, and emergency procedures.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
Previous experience working with children is highly desirable.
Certification Requirements
Must complete a 90-hour School Nurse Certification Program within two years of hire (includes mentorship and online training).
In addition to a Delaware RN license, candidates must obtain an educator license and School Nurse Certification through the Delaware Department of Education, including a performance evaluation.
