Our team, led by seasoned technology founders and renowned doctor Mark Hyman MD (Cleveland Clinic, 15x NYT Best Selling author), is looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer.
The tech team includes engineers who have worked on machine learning systems at scale, including a former tech lead from Google Research. We're a scrappy team of engineers/designers/PMs, growing rapidly and eager to expand our capabilities!
The role
We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Staff Software Engineer to join our dynamic team at Function. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and implementing software solutions that enable our members to access their health data in real-time. You will play a critical role in leading our engineering efforts, ensuring scalability, performance, and security in all our systems.

Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of complex software solutions, ensuring they are scalable, robust, and maintainable.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, providing technical leadership and clarity in engineering decisions.
- Drive high-impact projects, ensuring delivery is aligned with Function's strategic goals.
- Tackle and resolve challenging technical issues, setting a standard for engineering excellence.

Requirements
- 5+ years of proven experience as a Staff Software Engineer or in a similar senior technical role.
- Deep passion for improving healthcare through technology and empowering individuals to manage their health.
- Extensive experience in software development, with expertise in languages like Python, GO, Rust, or Java.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud, and containerization technologies like Docker.
- Strong grasp of software engineering principles and practices, including Agile methodologies, test-driven development, and CI/CD.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, able to understand and simplify complex systems.
- Comfortable with remote work and experienced in a collaborative, distributed team environment.
- Continuous learner, open to questioning assumptions and committed to innovation.
- Experience building large-scale systems.

- Start-up experience, particularly in early-stage technology companies.
- Background in Data Engineering.
- Knowledge of health technologies like Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch, CGMs.

Your first 3 months
- Month 1
- Onboard quickly, understanding the technical landscape and existing systems at Function.
- Collaborate with the team on ongoing projects, providing expertise and insights.
- Get to know the engineering and operations teams, integrating into our dynamic workflow.
- Participate in strategic discussions and planning sessions for upcoming projects.
- Month 2
- Begin leading significant software development projects, coordinating with engineering leads.
- Take ownership of parts of our development process, enhancing our software engineering practices.

- What is Function's approach to remote work? Function is 100% remote across the United States, from Austin to New York to San Francisco. We meet up in person on occasion.
- Who works at Function? We're small but growing! The team includes: Mike, Dr. Hyman, Sean, Max, Shea, Jonathan, Pranitha, Sara, Tova, Amy, Kiara, Whitney, Erika and many more.
- What's the interview process like? First, you'll interact with our recruiters as an initial screening. Second, you'll meet with our VP of Engineering, Sean O'Keefe, our Technical Product Manager, John Elam, or our Platform Lead, Max Castrucci. Third, you'll meet with our Cofounder & CTO, Mike Nemke. On these calls, we're looking to understand your interests, experience, and if you're a culture fit. We will then do a short technical interview all on a Zoom call. Lastly, you'll have a Cofounders interview, where you'll meet the cofounders that have built and run the company. After that we'll send an offer! If we don't give an offer, we'll be sure to provide feedback.
