    Position Summary**

    IOWN is seeking a motivated GIS Intern to join our Origination and Development team for Summer 2025. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in GIS data management, spatial analysis, workflow automation, and web mapping—all within the context of utility-scale renewable energy development. Interns will work closely with our GIS Lead to support critical project workflows while developing valuable technical and professional skills.

    Responsibilities

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

    • Spatial Data QA/QC: Conduct quality assurance and quality control of internal and external geospatial datasets to ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
    • Origination Support: Assist in performing spatial analyses, generating data exports, and supporting site screening efforts during early-stage project evaluations.
    • Development Support: Create maps, figures, and geospatial deliverables for land acquisition, permitting, interconnection, and related development tasks.
    • Additional Duties: Participate in other tasks and assignments as needed, with opportunities to tailor work based on skills and interests.

    Qualifications, Education and Experience

    • Current student or recent graduate in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field.
    • Students who enrolled in or recently completed a GIS Professional Certificate Program are also encouraged to apply.
    • Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, including map creation, spatial queries, geodatabase management, and data visualization.
    • Strong foundation in spatial analysis and cartographic principles.
    • Ability to manage geospatial data across multiple formats and sources with attention to metadata standards and schema consistency.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Strong general computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

    Preferred Skills:

    • Experience with Python scripting (e.g., arcpy , ArcGIS API for Python) for automating GIS workflows.
    • Familiarity with web mapping tools such as Experience Builder and Field Maps.
    • Interest or experience in renewable energy development and site selection constraints.
    • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
    • Self-directed and proactive with strong problem-solving and organizational skills.

    The above-listed salary range is required by the California Pay Transparency Act and may differ depending on the location of those candidates hired nationwide. The salary range shared in the job description is for the listed position and only pertains to the candidate if they work in San Diego, CA. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to internal pay equity, skill set, education, licenses and certifications, geographic location, essential job duties and requirements, and the necessary experience relative to the job's minimum qualifications. An additional discretionary bonus structure or incentives may be offered as part of the overall compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, dental, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
