    THE REGISTERED NURSE ASSIGNED TO THE OPERATING ROOM (SURGERY) WILL DEMONSTRATE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE QUALITY CARE BASED UPON THE NURSING PROCESS AND ASSESSED PHYSICAL, PSYCHOSOCIAL, EDUCATIONAL AND SAFETY NEEDS AS APPROPRIATE TO THE AGE OF THE PATIENT.  THE OPERATING ROOM ROUTINELY PROVIDES CARE TO INFANT, PEDIATRIC, ADOLESCENT, ADULT AND GERIATRIC PATIENTS.

     

    THE REGISTERED NURSE ASSESSES, PLANS, IMPLEMENTS, EVALUATES AND SUPERVISES INDIVIDUAL CARE ON A NURSING UNIT ACCORDING TO ORGANIZATIONAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.  PROVIDES CLINICAL LEADERSHIP FOR PATIENT CARE.  WITHIN THE LEVEL OF THE INDIVIDUAL’S QUALIFICATIONS, MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK ON OTHER PERIOPERATIVE UNITS BASED UPON PATIENT ACTIVITY AND STAFF DISTRIBUTION.  PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

    Required Skills

    1. LICENSED TO PRACTICE PROFESSIONAL NURSING IN THE STATE OF OHIO.
    2. NURSING DEGREE (AD, DIPLOMA, BSN, ETC.) FROM AN ACCREDITED SCHOOL OF NURSING.
    3. CNOR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED.
    4. RNFA PREFERRED
    5. CURRENT/RECENT SURGERY EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.
    6. ABILITY TO CIRCULATE AND SCRUB AND ASSIST PREFERRED.
    7. CARDIAC MONITOR PROFICIENCY PREFERRED (OR MUST OBTAIN WITHIN ONE YEAR).
    8. MEDITECH ORM PREFERRED.
    9. KNOWLEDGE AND ADHERENCE TO THE HOSPITAL’S I CARE STANDARDS.
    10. ABOVE AVERAGE CLINICAL SKILLS IN DELIVERY OF CARE.

    • Demonstrates knowledge of the nursing process and standards of care, principles of asepsis, infection control, surgical anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and operative techniques related to the operative procedure in which the Registered Nurse participates.
    • Completes Perioperative assessment per policy with consideration for physical and spiritual needs.
    • Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information
    • Assesses each patient prior to the start of any invasive procedure with a focus on identifying intra and postoperative needs.
    • Reassesses patient needs according to their response to care, change in condition and diagnosis at regular intervals.
    • Functions in the role of circulating, scrub or second assistant based on level of training and experience.
    • Prioritizes patient care, analyzes diagnostic test results and takes appropriate action, reports pertinent observations to physicians including adverse reactions to care.
    • Assess patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.
    • Develop an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
    • Implement the plan of care by:
      • protecting the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources;
      • Performing accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items; Maintains accurate sponge, sharp and instrument counts.
      • Identifies unusual techniques, instruments or equipment required for the procedure.
      • performing interventions necessary to ensure that the patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level;
      • managing the patient’s specimens according to organizational policy and procedures;
      • communicating the patient’s current status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care;
      • administering medications safely and correctly;
      • performing interventions to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels;
      • performing interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels;
      • performing interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period;
      • performing interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection;
      • assessing the knowledge level of the patient or designated support person;
      • providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure;
      • involving the patient or designated support person actively in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process;
      • protecting the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy;
      • providing age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice; and
      • Providing consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.
    • Responds and intervenes to emergent situations appropriately
    • Complete Midas reports for unplanned events prior to end of shift
    • Coordinates and participates in patient and/or family teaching with consideration for patient age, cultural and religious practices, emotional barriers, desire and motivation to learn, physical and cognitive limitations, language barriers and financial implications of care choices.
    • Answers the phone with appropriate professionalism and in accordance with hospital policy
    • Completes timely discharge phone calls to patients, document patient response, and communicate to management patient care concerns
    • Communicates effectively with patients, families, and other health care professionals.
    • Work irregular hours including call hours
