General Manager – Paynesville Farmers Union Cooperative
The Paynesville Farmers Union Cooperative board of directors is seeking a General Manager to replace its retiring leader, who has provided many years of outstanding service to the organization. This organization is a member-owned cooperative that provides Agronomy, energy, and services to producers in southwestern Minnesota.
Candidates considered for this position must possess leadership success in a multi-division organization, with preference given to those with experience in the retail cooperative system. This organization has deep roots in the region's communities, spanning multiple generations of producer members. Therefore, candidates must understand and appreciate the cooperative business model and the opportunities it brings to its members.
Primary Responsibilities
- Partner with the Board of Directors to establish strategic direction and expectations, then create organizational goals and a system of accountability to exceed those expectations.
- Provides effective communication at all organizational levels, including board guidance, the leadership team, employees, business partners, the community, and any related government or regulatory agencies.
- Relate to rural members with a high level of integrity and trust.
- Recruit, hire, develop, and retain a high-performing team.
Key Requirements
- This position requires the highest financial acumen, people leadership, and ag industry foresight.
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field with cooperative and/or retail agribusiness experience
- A strong track record of performance in P&L management and oversight while serving in a leadership capacity.
- Ability to drive success through a culture of teamwork and collaboration
- Possess a fundamental understanding of retail Agronomy and Energy operations, with proven success in at least one of those areas.

- This position reports to a supportive and motivated Board of Directors and is supported by a veteran leadership team.
- The position is based in the organization’s main office, which is located in Paynesville, Minnesota.
- A key component of this position is community involvement; therefore, the GM must reside within a daily commutable range to the office and ideally within their current trade area.
