Position Summary
The General Manager is the strategic and operational leader of the SPENGA Ann Arbor studio. This role is accountable for driving studio performance, membership growth, brand reputation, and staff excellence. The GM oversees all daily operations while also executing long-range initiatives in marketing, community engagement, and business development.
We’re seeking a leader who brings strong operational discipline, proven sales ability, and a passion for creating an exceptional member experience. This role is ideal for someone who wants to grow a fitness business.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
Recruit, hire, train, coach, and inspire a high-performing team of instructors and front-desk staff.
Establish clear performance expectations and accountability structures.
Lead monthly team meetings, communicate goals, and reinforce the SPENGA culture.
Maintain a positive, professional, and motivating environment for both staff and members.
Sales, Membership Growth & Retention
Own studio sales performance, including membership conversions, upsells, and retention metrics.
Lead by example with consistent sales activity (tours, calls, texts, follow-up).
Implement member lifecycle systems (lead nurturing, onboarding, engagement, win-backs).
Review performance dashboards and KPIs weekly with the Owner; identify trends and adjust tactics quickly.
Marketing & Community Engagement
Oversee local marketing strategy, including digital marketing coordination, referral programs, and in-studio promotions.
Build and maintain strong partnerships with local businesses, corporate wellness programs, influencers, and community organizations.
Plan and execute events that elevate brand awareness and drive traffic (pop-ups, open houses, charity classes, corporate team sessions).
Collaborate with ownership to optimize ad campaigns, funnels, landing pages, and lead quality.
Studio Operations & Member Experience
Ensure the studio environment meets SPENGA’s high standards for cleanliness, safety, hospitality, and aesthetic.
Manage schedules, payroll, and staffing coverage to support optimal class capacity and service levels.
Oversee equipment maintenance, repairs, ordering, and vendor communication.
Implement and refine SOPs to ensure consistency, efficiency, and operational excellence.
Address member concerns and resolve issues promptly and professionally.
Business Administration & Reporting
Deliver timely and accurate weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports.
Manage budgets, expenses, inventory, and cost controls.
Support implementation of strategic growth initiatives set by ownership.
Maintain compliance with SPENGA corporate standards and franchise requirements.
Qualifications
Proven leadership and management experience; fitness, hospitality, retail, or wellness industry preferred.
Strong background in sales and customer engagement; track record of hitting targets is essential.
Ability to motivate, develop, and hold a team accountable.
High business acumen with ability to interpret KPIs and make data-driven decisions.
Excellent communication skills and a warm, confident, professional presence.
Creative mindset with ability to execute marketing initiatives and events.

Compensation & Benefits
Compensation will be commensurate with experience and aligned with the strategic scope of this leadership role. The package includes:
Base Salary: Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications
Performance Bonus: Quarterly bonuses tied to sales, retention, and operational performance
Uncapped Commission: Uncapped commission opportunities based on personal membership sales and revenue generation
