    Position Purpose

    Generation Ready seeks a skilled Facilitator to support an exciting and innovative project to transform the culture of schools through collaboration among the entire school community. This project is called the Bronx Collaborative Schools Model (Bronx Plan), a joint effort of the New York City Department of Education (DOE) and the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) to work together supporting students in achieving their highest potential— academically, socially, emotionally, physically, mentally and civically.     The Bronx Plan supports the development of a collaborative environment where all members of the school community work together to tackle the specific issues and challenges facing their school using a local, grassroots approach. Working with schools that are part of the Bronx Plan is an opportunity to support schools' efforts to reduce teacher turnover and vacancies and increase student achievement. This groundbreaking plan honors the fact that schools know themselves best, and gives the school community the opportunity to work together to develop and implement a plan to make their school better and improve outcomes for all students.

    Bronx Plan Schools will create plans to address their particular challenges. All stakeholders will be involved and the whole community will be heard. School staff taking on this important work will receive coaching and other supports along the way- that's where facilitators come in. successful facilitators will have the experience necessary to work in schools, but also be willing to take on a learning stance and develop new skills and approaches to work in Bronx Plan schools.

    As a Facilitator, you will receive training from Brandeis, Harvard and DOE/UFT faculty and staff at the start of the project. Over the course of the project you will support School Committees in 4-5 schools in the Bronx Plan, which includes all of the Bronx and Brownsville and East New York, Brooklyn, and Far Rockaway, Queens, to build a collaborative culture in their schools and to carry out projects to achieve their identified goals. You and your fellow Facilitators will be supported by each other and by a Change Leader. The Change Leader will coach you to navigate sensitive relationships within the schools and will serve as your liaison to the Central Committee, the DOE and the UFT.

    Retired Department of Education employees who are eligible to work in New York City are encouraged to apply. In order to be eligible you have to have seprated from service from the DOE for one year and one day.

    NOTE:  THIS POSITION IS BASED IN NYC. TRAINING AND WORK WILL CONTINUE THROUGH SY 2019-2020.

    Responsibilities

    ● Develop 4-5 School Committees at participating schools, including 6-12 members from administration, staff, teachers and community members.

    ● Engage and facilitate the process by which they become a well-functioning team, and identify and achieve their goals

    ● Coach the School Committees in the formation of a vision for the school year, and support them to build collaborative capacity in each school for leadership, conflict resolution, data-driven process improvement, shared accountability and shared rewards.

    ● Meet with your fellow Facilitators monthly using Zoom to share your experiences, successes and struggles and to receive additional training, led by the project Change Leader.

    ● Facilitate an improvement process selected by each School Committee by conducting interviews, observing and collecting data, and work with the School Committees to interpret and share data with stakeholders and design interventions based on the data.

    ● Build relational coordination within the School Committees and in the broader school communities, including shared goals, shared knowledge and mutual respect, supported by frequent, timely, accurate and problem-solving communication

    ● Provide a wide range of support including performing the work associated with the project plan, coaching and facilitating School Committees, serving as a liaison to collaborators and subcontractors, and maintaining and developing relational coordination.

    Essential Functions

    ● 50%:  Support project objectives and deliverables in conjunction with other team members and partners. Coach school-based teams and facilitate meetings and communication, identifying coordination challenges and key stakeholders. Establish working relationships, develop supportive training materials and documentation.   

    ● 20%:  Prepare communications to and from the school-based teams, communicating team objectives, identifying stakeholders and suggesting resources to achieve desired outcomes.  Participate in discussions with NYC school leadership.

    ● 15%:  Facilitate surveys and interviews to obtain qualitative and quantitative data during the project and report out to local and central stakeholders. Utilize data to help school-based teams strengthen networks, implementing relational, structural and work process interventions as needed. Share observational data collected throughout the project with the team.

    ● 15%:  Support the work of the project by researching current trends and issues related to the objectives of the school-based teams.  Share findings to help inform the school-based teams to identify methods to achieve desired outcomes.

    ● 10%:  Develop and produce written documents to inform the school-based team, NYC DOE and the team about project findings and implications.

    Required Skills and Experience

    • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college required, with preference for Master's degree in education, public policy or related field.
    • A minimum of 10 years teaching experience in the K-12 classroom, preferably with substantial experience in a large urban school district.
    • Experience with, and understanding of, socio-economically and ethnically diverse student populations.
    • Experience in leading collaborative professional learning with school leaders and communities, creating protocols, practices and structures to achieve shared goals.
    • Strong interpersonal communication, relationship and negotiation skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to build positive, respectful professional relationships
    • Ability to support teams to build shared beliefs and attitudes.
    • Ability to design organizational structures and protocols that support relational trust and build effective teams.
    • Passionate about helping schools to support students and staff to achieve their highest potential.
    • Ability to work independently and contribute to projects creatively and with initiative.

    Proficient with Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Drive, Docs and Sheets.
