    Job Description

    STRUCTURAL FORENSIC ENGINEER

JOB DESCRIPTION: Geohazards Forensic Engineering LLC is an expanding, privately-owned company. Our firm was founded in 1985 as a geological services company, but in the last several years we have expanded our services to include structural and forensic engineering services, mostly conducting investigations of existing buildings and structures.

This is a full-time, salaried, position, focusing on projects throughout the United States, mainly in the Midwest region. The ideal candidate would be located in the greater Chicago area and would cover assignments in the midwestern states. Ideal candidates located outside of the Chicago area, willing to travel to these states, will be considered.

Thus, the person would be expected to work out of their home/office, conducting forensic engineering investigations of buildings and other structures for a wide variety of problems. The primary focus of the job involves determining the cause, origin, and duration of reported damages. This involves travel to various sites (typically, single family residences) primarily in the states listed above with the possibility of traveling to other states in the country. Once the site investigation is completed, a draft report (using our templates) is then written from your remote location and sent to our headquarters for a thorough peer review.

You must be highly independent, self-motivated, and organized, due to the non-traditional aspect of this remote position. The potential candidate must have experience in this field and understand the basic functions of this type of engineering work, as well as be able to work with little to no supervision the majority of the time (however, help is always a phone call or email away). Types of damage routinely investigated include structural damage, roof damage, moisture intrusion, interior water damage (plumbing and other causes), settlement and other foundation problems, construction defects, general building material failures, and of course, all types of storm-related damage.

Our primary clients are insurance companies. However, property owners and attorneys also utilize our services. Prior experience with these types of clients, including litigation and deposition work, is highly desirable.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering is required. • P.E. license in the state of residence is required. Licenses in all Midwest states is preferred or ability to obtain licenses in all required states upon commencement of employment. • Five or more years of combined structural and forensic engineering experience. We prefer a candidate with traditional structural engineering design experience who is at ease reading a set of plans, knows how a building is put together, and is very familiar with architectural components of a building, not just the structure (e.g., roof coverings, wall cladding, flooring, flashing and waterproofing, windows and doors, etc.). • Must have roof inspection experience on all types of roof systems, especially single-family homes (shingles, tile). Also, must have attic investigation experience. Must be willing and comfortable performing these types of investigations on two-story structures using a ladder. • Generally, you should have experience in all common types of forensic engineering investigations, especially water damage. Being able to pinpoint the cause and origin of water damage and establish duration is extremely important to our clients. • Ability to communicate with our clients in a technical and professional manner by telephone, email, and in person, and summarize your findings in your reports. • High skill level in technical writing, and the ability to put together a complete report with photographic references in a timely manner. • Manage multiple investigations and reports simultaneously and complete the assignments within the provided timelines.

BENEFITS: • Work remotely from your home office when not performing inspections. • Independent work environment, but with the office management and engineering technical support of an established and experienced company. • We try to limit as much administrative and other hassles from our engineer’s duties as possible so that you can concentrate on what you excel at - forensic engineering investigations and completing reports. • Full range of benefits, including: Paid time off, health insurance, retirement plan, and long-term disability insurance. • Geohazards provides a company car, computer, and company credit card for business expenses. Basic forensic engineering tools such as a digital camera, foldable ladder, moisture meter, flashlight, tape measure, etc. will also be supplied

SALARY: • Salary to commensurate with experience

NOTE: Geohazards Forensic Engineering, LLC is an Equal Opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status or other protected category. All applicants must undergo a background check as well as a drug test to be eligible for employment
