    JOB SUMMARY: Experienced engineering leader responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing all activities, projects, and personnel within the mechanical design discipline. This position will serve as the direct report for sections within mechanical engineering including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and commissioning. The Mechanical Design Director possesses excellent communication and organizational skills required to lead, mentor, and hold accountable the mechanical design team to consistently deliver quality engineering deliverables. The Mechanical Design Director supports project teams by providing in-process and quality assurance reviews and may lead project teams directly by serving as the Project Manager.

     

    DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS: 

     

    • Determine personnel needs for the Mechanical Engineering discipline and individual projects based upon personnel capabilities, current workload, and projected workload; collect information and feedback from staff to develop workload projections
    • Review performance and work quality of discipline personnel and conduct evaluations on a regular basis including quarterly reviews; provide recognition for outstanding contributions and constructive feedback for areas of improvement
    • Review all Mechanical Engineering deliverables for technical content, drawing quality, and adherence to design codes and project requirements
    • Administer compensation for discipline personnel; provide recommendations on salary increases and approve personnel promotions
    • Act a mentor for discipline personnel by providing continuous assistance and support through project oversight, professional training, and career development
    • Participate and lead discipline meetings and design reviews with mechanical personnel
    • Discuss discipline and project objectives, requirements, and budgets with clients and mechanical staff
    • Establish mechanical design standards and procedures and manage the work of project teams by performing quality assurance reviews
    • Perform research and review trade publications and literature to stay current on developments within the mechanical engineering field; attend local, state, and national seminars, conventions and summits when appropriate; collaborate with mechanical staff, project managers, and others to improve or develop new engineering methods to improve efficiency, technique, quality, and dependability
    • Provide oversight and assistance with writing and editing of mechanical specifications and equipment selection for mechanical systems and devices
    • Conduct or delegate job-site inspections to ensure projects are adhering to specifications and design intent
    • Participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance in relation to zoning laws, fire regulations, building codes and other ordinances; convey applicable changes of local, state, and federal regulations and ordinances to discipline appropriate personnel
    • Support business development by identifying new product lines, opportunities, and networking
    • Perform other duties as assigned or instructed

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with discipline personnel, office staff, senior management, and clients
    • Demonstrated ability to promote and establish teamwork and individual leadership within the discipline
    • Ability to successfully and continuously lead a team of engineering professionals to meet and exceed project, discipline, and company goals
    • Extensive knowledge of building codes, mechanical engineering standards, and best practices
    • Effective time management and organizational skills; ability to become involved in several projects and remain up to date on the various developmental stages
    • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and mechanical design software
    • Knowledge of capabilities of Revit, AutoCAD, and other production software

     

    EDUCATION & LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

     

    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering
    • Professional Registration as a Mechanical Engineer (Georgia registration preferred); ability to quickly obtain registration in additional states based on NCEES reciprocity/ comity process
    • 15 years minimum experience in Mechanical Engineering encompassing commercial, industrial, mission critical, higher education, and health care design
    • 5-10 years of progressive management experience
    • Current affiliation and/or membership with local, state or national industry organizations

  • Qualifications

     

    SKILLS:

     

    • Working knowledge of Word, AutoCAD Excel and MS-Project.
    • Experience with project cost management and cost tracking of all costs associated with environmental projects. 
    • Knowledge of federal, state and local environmental regulatory requirements. 
    • Knowledge of ammonia cooling systems is preferred.
    • Dynamic, hands-on ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented food-processing environment.
    • Must have the ability to make effective communications, decisions, and directions, interact well with co-workers, understand and follow posted work rules/procedures and to accept constructive criticism.
    • Ability to travel is required.
