    Led by former Congresswoman and gun violence survivor Gabrielle Giffords, Giffords Law Center is a nonprofit organization whose team is on a mission to save lives from gun violence.

    Giffords Law Center is seeking a motivated legal program associate to join our team and support all aspects of our legal team’s legislative advocacy, litigation, and public education work. This role involves balancing a large variety of projects with multiple members of our team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills while doing meaningful work to address America’s epidemic of gun violence and join a growing and high-profile national political movement.

    The staff at Giffords Law Center is highly collaborative and team-oriented. The work is fast-paced, complex, and often creative. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented team-player who is also able to take initiative and work with minimal supervision to support other colleagues’ work in a variety of areas. This role requires strong time and task management skills, strong reading comprehension and writing ability, and an interest in learning and developing new skills.

    This is a full-time position based in our San Francisco, CA office. As the safety and wellbeing of our team is of utmost importance, all Giffords staff members are working remotely until it is safe for us to resume working in an office, traveling, and holding in-person meetings.

    DUTIES + RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The legal program associate's primary responsibility is to support Giffords Law Center's legal team in all aspects of our legislative advocacy, litigation, and public education work. The associate will have significant guidance and training on these projects but will eventually be expected to independently manage many assignments as well. Essential tasks include:

    • Writing: Compose and edit fact sheets, website content, bill support and opposition letters, and other written materials drawing from the legal team’s research and reports and the associate’s own analysis.
    • Editing: Work with attorneys and other members of the legal team to ensure that all written materials (website content, litigation briefs, educational reports, fact sheets, etc.) are accurate and that documents and citations are properly formatted.
    • Legislative tracking: Work with attorneys to read, summarize, track, and categorize legislation and to compose regular reports about moving legislation.
    • Policy Research Support: Conduct research assignments drawing from news articles, policy reports, and other sources, and conduct basic data analysis (such as calculating changes in firearm-related deaths over time), to be used in advocacy and communications materials, and policy reports.
    • Communication: Support allied groups, advocates, and members of the public who contact Giffords Law Center by responding to calls, emails, and letters from individuals or groups seeking assistance.
    • Organization: Work with the legal team to organize information and research by creating and regularly updating databases of laws, legal decisions, and other information and materials relevant to the organization’s work.
    • Administrative support: Provide some administrative support, as needed, such as in planning and staffing partner convenings and other public events.

    VALUED NON-ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, + EXPERIENCE

    • Experience reading and tracking legislation and/or familiarity with the legislative process
    • Experience conducting basic web research and/or basic data analysis about issues related to public policy or current events
    • Familiarity with gun violence prevention policies and solutions, or related policy areas

    COMPENSATION + BENEFITS

    The salary range begins at $45,000 a year with exact salary depending on experience. Benefits include employer funded health, dental, and vision insurance; health, transit, and parking flexible spending accounts; 401k plan with 4% employer match; 25 days of PTO annually; and paid holidays.
