    Job Description

    FOOD OPERATIONS SPECIALIST FOR RESIDENT CAMP Looking for a summer job that makes a difference, join our 2021 camp staff today! Our resident camp is a place where energetic and passionate staff come together to provide a safe and positive learning environment for girls ages 6-17. At Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana camps we have a wide variety of opportunities for you. Campers and staff alike spend the summer living outdoors, trying new activities, gaining independence, and building long-lasting relationships.

    As part of the Food Service Team, you will be responsible for helping provide delicious, fresh, well-balanced meals to our campers & staff, adapt menus to dietary needs, maintain safety standards within the kitchen and dining hall, and put together food pack outs for camper groups.

    As a Food Operations Specialist you will be responsible for checking food pack out and cook out requests, preparing all pack outs and cook outs for programs each week, and taking the lead on intaking food deliveries and managing food inventories. Will report to the Food Service Manager.

    WORK COMMITMENT:

    Our summer season runs from end of May through mid-August, including staff training and excluding our fourth of July break.

    Camp staff that live on-site work from 11 a.m. Sunday morning until 10 p.m. Friday evening every week.

    Camp staff that commute typically work 40 hours a week, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., actual shifts vary and will be determined in conversation with the Camp Director.

    CAMP STAFF BENEFITS:

    This is a paid summer camp position with optional room and board. At camp you will quickly discover that the more you put into the experience, the more rewarding it will be. Throughout staff training and every day rigors at camp, you will experience countless opportunities to be challenged and held to higher standard. These experiences and challenges will help build your resume with a wide range of customer service, food service, & commercial kitchen experiences.

    FOOD OPERATIONS SPECIALIST QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Loves to interact with children and has prior experience working with children of various ages
    • Enjoys working in a busy kitchen environment and has prior food service experience
    • Experience with preparing food for off-site service preferred
    • Current Food Handlers certification
    • High school graduate or equivalent
    • 18 years of age or older by June 13th
    • Proof of health physical clearing the candidate for work in a camp setting
    • Willingness to live and work in an indoor and outdoor camp setting, which includes working irregular hours with limited or simple equipment, rustic facilities, wildlife and insects; limited technology while at camp, and daily exposure to sun, rain, and other weather conditions

    FOOD OPERATIONS SPECIALIST RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Role model problem-solving, collaboration, and initiative to campers and other staff
    • Assist in creating a clean, safe, and accommodating food service experience for campers and staff
    • Take lead in the management of inventories, receiving orders, and storing of food and supplies
    • Prepare all weekly field trip pack out meals and on-site cook out meals for all programs at camp while maintaining food safety and temperature management
    • Assist with the cleanliness and sanitation of dishes, kitchen equipment, kitchen, and dining hall- including but not limited to keeping drinking water containers clean and full, sanitizing food surfaces, dishwashing, proper food and equipment storage, sweeping, and mopping.
    • Assist in the management of food allergies and special dietary needs of campers and staff, especially involving pack outs and cook outs
    • Assist with the opening and closing of food service operations for the resident camp season
    • Assists in seeing that the kitchen and dining hall meet state laws, local laws, American Camping Association standards, and Girl Scout standards in all areas
    • Other duties as assigned

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    Indoor on concrete flooring with exposure to temperature changes while using kitchen equipment and storage units. Terrain on camp varies from flat to hilly, paved and unpaved.
