    Job Description

    ADVENTURE COURSE LEADER FOR RESIDENT CAMP   Looking for a summer job that makes a difference, join our 2021 camp staff today! Our resident camp is a place where energetic and passionate staff come together to provide a safe and positive learning environment for girls ages 6-17. At Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana camps we have a wide variety of opportunities for you. Campers and staff alike spend the summer living outdoors, trying new activities, gaining independence, and building long-lasting relationships.

     

    As camps’ Adventure Course Leader you will be critical to the success of the summer as part of the leadership team and the first-line resource for campers and counselors on the Albert C. Hanna Adventure Course at camp. In this role you will supervise and guide campers and counselors through progressive teambuilding, low challenge course activities, and high adventure course activities.

     

    WORK COMMITMENT:

    Our summer season runs from end of May through mid-August, including staff training and excluding our fourth of July break.

    Camp staff that live on-site work from 11 a.m. Sunday morning until 10 p.m. Friday evening every week.

    Camp staff that commute typically work 40 hours a week between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., actual shifts vary and will be determined in conversation with the Camp Director.

    The nitty-gritties: This is a paid summer camp position with optional room and board (yes that’s right you can live on camp and get all your food provided for free!). In exchange for your commitment to an exciting and action-packed summer, you will receive free First Aid and CPR certifications and a rocking camp staff shirt!

    ADVENTURE COURSE LEADER QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Loves to interact with children and has prior experience working with children of various ages
    • Enjoys spending time outdoors and has prior experience working in an outdoor setting
    • 2 years minimum of experience facilitating teambuilding activities and low ropes course programs with a focus on teamwork, trust, and cooperation (3-5 years preferred)
    • 2 years minimum experience belaying (3-5 years preferred)
    • 1 year minimum experience with rock climbing and high ropes course activities (2-5 years preferred)
    • Current ropes course instructor certification (preferred)
    • Must attend, participate in and successfully demonstrate required skills during pre-season mandatory ropes course facilitator training in May.
    • High school graduate or equivalent
    • 21 years of age or older by June 13th (Preferred: With a valid driver’s license)
    • Proof of health physical clearing the candidate for work in a camp setting
    • Willingness to live and work in an indoor and outdoor camp setting, which includes working irregular hours with limited or simple equipment, rustic facilities, wildlife and insects; limited technology while at camp, and daily exposure to sun, rain, and other weather conditions

     

    ADVENTURE COURSE LEADER RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide fun, positive and active leadership to campers and staff
    • Help build a supportive environment where campers can grow, make new friends, and try new things
    • Role model problem-solving, collaboration, and initiative to campers and other staff
    • Develop, supervise, and deliver facilitation of on-site and off-site programs involving outdoor skills, backcountry knowledge, and adventure-based activities with campers and staff through the use of girl planning and Girl Scout program guidelines
    • Oversee campers and staff during group activities, meals, and transitions to and from scheduled events
    • Assist in developing and implementing a safe and attainable progression of teambuilding activities and adventure course elements for campers and groups
    • Responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out low and high adventure course activities
    • Teach and monitor proper use of climbing tower, zip line, high ropes course elements, and low ropes challenge course elements and all equipment
    • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures
    • Conduct daily check of adventure course areas and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good condition
    • Assist in maintaining records of equipment in the adventure course equipment log daily, indicating any repairs, and retiring equipment promptly
    • Assist with set up of ropes course prior to and during staff training as needed
    • Assist with initial and end-of-season inventory
    • Maintain open and efficient communication with camp director, health supervisor, and other staff as needed involving camper’s illness and injury
    • Maintain responsibility for the overall well-being of campers throughout their camp experience
    • Other duties as assigned
