DESCRIPTION
To fulfill the mission of the Ronald M. Loeb Center for Alzheimer's Disease, Drs. Alison Goate and Edoardo Marcora (in the Departments of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City) are searching for highly skilled, creative and motivated postdoctoral scientists with diverse experiences and interests in genetics, genomics, microglia biology and neuroimmunology to join an interdisciplinary team and be the drivers of our efforts to translate genetic discoveries into testable therapeutic hypotheses and early stage drug development efforts for Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Candidates will join a multidisciplinary and highly collaborative research team that includes geneticists, computational biologists, immunologists, neuroscientists, and physician-scientists, as well as at other collaborating leading US and European academic institutions and biopharmaceutical companies.
WE HAVE TWO OPEN POSITIONS! One with a focus on computational approaches and genetics and genomics of AD, and the other with a focus on experimental approaches and microglia biology and neuroimmunology of AD.
COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST
We are looking for a statistical geneticist, genetic epidemiologist, biostatistician or bioinformatician/computational biologist with experience in analyzing and interpreting human genetic data in association with complex disease and disease-associated molecular and cellular traits that are relevant to disease pathogenesis (e.g., eQTLs and epigenomic annotations, clinical data, bulk and single cell transcriptomic signatures and/or cellular phenotypes from genetic or drug perturbation screens, etc). The position will involve collaboration with dry- and wet-lab biologists to generate new mechanistic insights in disease etiology and progression, and translation to therapeutic strategies.
Qualifications and Skills
EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGIST
We are looking for a molecular and cell biologist with experience in translating genetics and human biology observations into in vitro (induced pluripotent stem cell models) and/or in vivo systems (mouse models) to understand innate immune modifiers of AD pathogenesis. In particular, the Goate lab concentrates on identifying human genetic variants associated with AD and dissecting the molecular, cellular and tissue-level mechanisms by which these variants and the associated genes (e.g., APOE, TREM2, SPI1/PU.1, MEF2C, MS4A) modulate disease risk, with a major focus on the role of microglial cell function (e.g., phagocytic clearance of cholesterol-rich cellular debris) in the maintenance of brain tissue homeostasis during aging and in disease conditions.
