    TITLE: Adult Education Instructor - Mobile Metro Jail DATE WRITTEN: 03/2020

     

    DEPARTMENT: Educational Services SUPERVISED BY: Education Division Director

     

    SUPERVISES: Volunteers / Students STATUS: Part-time or Full time/Non-Exempt

     

    MISSION CONTRIBUTION:

    To meet the mission of the agency by providing services for people seeking education, workforce training and/or career advancement opportunities.

    FUNCTION:

    To provide adult Education instruction and support services to approved Mobile Metro Jail inmates and assist the Ed. Services Director in complying with the Alabama Community College System federal standards.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (must be able to perform these functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation).

    1. Provides world class customer service including effective communication with internal and external customers.
    2. Performs intake and informs prospective students of all Goodwill services.
    3. Works with Metro Jail Chaplaincy team to coordinate instructional classes in accordance with other chapel functions, security protocols, and availability of instructional staff and volunteers.
    4. Strictly adheres to all Metro Jail staff policies and procedures to ensure a safe instructional environment.
    5. Communicates with Chaplaincy department regularly regarding progress of class, specific concerns regarding students, policy/procedure changes/updates.
    6. Conducts assessments of students basic skills for determining the most appropriate plan of instruction in conjunction with Metro Jail Chaplaincy staff.
    7. Develops with student academic and career goals to be included on the plan of instruction, clearly outlining the necessary steps for successful completion.
    8. Uses pre-tests, post-tests to measure students progress in alignment with Alabama Adult Education State Assessment Policy.
    9. Provides small group academic remediation for adults with varied skill levels, from basic literacy to GED preparation.
    10. Instructs, guides, and assists students in preparing to pass all 4 GED modules, effectively utilizing GEDReady practice test results, and the GED Test registration process.
    11. Administers ACT WorkKeys NCRC Assessments to appropriately leveled participants in adherence of the Alabama Community College Systems state goals.
    12. Meets with participants individually at regular intervals to review academic progress, make adjustments to POIs, and to develop future career goals.
    13. Maintains participant files keeping them up-to-date and adhering to confidentiality standards.
    14. Inputs demographic data and necessary participant updates in GES database in a timely manner.
    15. Enters weekly participant attendance into the AAESAP database, and informs data entry specialist of any changes in student class schedule, location, or enrollment status.
    16. Reports student progress through required reports and departmental records and through on-going communication with supervisor.
    17. Assists the Director of Educational Services in the training and recruitment of tutors, as necessary.
    18. Develops and maintains instructional and reinforcement materials for students and tutors.
    19. Stays current on adult education, workforce development, special population issues and best practices by participating in on-going training and professional development activities including workshops conducted by Metro Jail Chaplaincy Department, seminars, conferences, in-house training and through personal research.
    20. Stays informed of community, agency, and program information through inter-office communications, and attendance at staff meetings.
    21. Participates in a variety of community awareness and fundraising activities which promote the program, agency and/or the funding source under the direction of supervisor.
    22. Acts as a positive role model for students in all aspects of professional performance.
    23. Observes all safety procedures and personnel policies.
    24. Regular attendance, as outlined in Goodwill policy, is required.
    25. Other duties as assigned.

     

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: (these are required to enable job holder to perform the essential functions of the job).

      1. Must be able to interact cordially and productively with a variety of people.

      3. Ability to use general office equipment including computer keyboard by touch.

      12. Must be dependable and reliable, following class schedule with few or no schedule adjustments.
      13. Must have access to reliable transportation in order to work at various work locations, including some disadvantaged areas of our territory.
      14. Must obtain and retain First Aid/CPR/AED certification and respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency at the worksite according to Goodwill Safety Policies & Procedures.
      15. Must have a valid drivers license for at least 3 years, liability automobile insurance and be insurable through the agencys insurance carrier.
      16. Must be at least 21 years of age.
      17. Must pass a drug screen, including random drug testing as required by the Drug Free Workplace policy.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:

    Adequately lighted and ventilated building. Regular travel between program locations and occasional travel throughout local area.

    • Bachelors degree in education or human service field required with two years of teaching/training experience preferred.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
    • Experience working with people with barriers to obtaining and maintaining employment preferred
    • Proficiency in English, grammar, spelling and math

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
    • Must be able to use hands, fingers and wrists, repetitively, using a computer keyboard.

    Additional Information

    Full-time Position - Monday-Friday  8am-4:30pm may also include 2 evenings per week and/or Saturday mornings.
