    Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is one of the largest privately held architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast. Recognizing the importance of making all the right connections and adding value to community projects, GMC Community Planning – together with Landscape Architecture, Architecture, and Engineering – works to build cohesive communities and great spaces to live, work, and play. Our expertise includes built environment design solutions, community outreach, strategic implementation, land development regulations, and grant/funding assistance.

    As a result, GMC has an opening for a Community Planner in Birmingham, Alabama to work on projects with our Alabama planning team and have the opportunity to participate on projects across the GMC southeast footprint position. At the heart of community planning is the community.

    Essential functions and responsibilities include:

    • Collaborate with planning and design professionals working with the public and private sectors, cities and counties, developers and business interests, not-for-profit organizations, and state and federal representatives
    • Participate in projects that include neighborhood and town center revitalization, community facility and infrastructure planning, greenspace and park planning, complete street planning and design, corridor planning, campus planning, mixed-use and sustainable communities planning, and economic development-oriented planning
    • Assist in the development of a variety of planning efforts, with a particular focus on plan documents and built environment improvement production
    • Provide Adobe Suites, GIS, Sketch-Up, hand drawings, research and analysis, and other graphics, mapping, and planning technology analysis and production
    • Participate in community involvement activities, including public workshops, charrettes, surveys, and stakeholder interviews.
    • Utilize innovative, technology-based techniques to encourage even greater levels of participation.
    • Collaborate to achieve creative solutions and impactful results for community through comprehensive and master planning and design
    • Communicate through public engagement, stakeholder committees, elected and appointed officials, and staff which all have important roles and a wealth of information to contribute to the planning process

    Qualifications

    • Master’s Degree in Community Planning or an Undergraduate Degree in planning, Urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or a related production field preferred
    • 0-3 years of experience applicable to city planning, built environment improvements, comprehensive planning, and community-oriented work
    • Self-starting hard worker that is passionate about working with interdisciplinary colleagues to improve communities while growing with our team
