    Principal Responsibilities: Several positions available for immediate hire and summer employment. Shifts available from morning to evening.These positions are flexible and great for students. Physical Requirements & Functions: -Ability to swim, dive into the pool, stand, walk, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and/or sit up to eight hours throughout the shift -Use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools and/or controls -Reach with hands and arms -Hearing and talking sufficient enough to communicate with members, guests and staff -Specific visions abilities include close vision, vision sufficient enough to read, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus -Must be able to push, pull or lift up to 50 lbs. Job Description: The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of patrons by guarding their area of responsibility by: -responding to any level of incident or emergency around the pool areas and the facility -enforcing our established rules in a fair and polite manner -checking and recording pool chemicals -being responsive to member and guest requests -maintaining communication and relationships with other staff/members/guests -and any other tasks assigned by the Aquatics Director or Asst. Pool Manager Above all, is patron safety! Duties & Responsibilities: -Monitors pool areas as assigned. -Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility -Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency -Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical service -Performs appropriate water rescues when necessary -Assists with various camps and programs as assigned -Participates in special events as directed by the Aquatics Director -Climbs up and down lifeguard stands; and sits during surveillance -Performs various opening and closing duties as described on the daily to do list -Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility -Vacuums pool bottom; empties skimmer baskets; skims surface of the pools; prepares pool surroundings for daily use including but not limited to straightening tables, chairs, pool equipment and offices; and disposing of trash and debris -Maintains amenities and cleanliness of changing rooms, bathrooms and showers; maintains guard house and storage areas as needed -Properly monitor towel supply; place towels in the washer and dryer when needed and fold towels as instructed one the wash/dry cycle is complete -Keeps supervisor or Aquatics Director informed of any problems arising with patrons, other staff members or the facility. Proficiency of Equipment: The Lifeguard must show a proficiency in the use and operation of the following equipment; and any other equipment deemed necessary to complete job duties -Lifesaving equipment such as rescue tubes, rescue hooks, ring buoys, spine boards, and c-collars, etc -Chemical feeders, pool vacuums, wet/dry vacuums, pool filters, power washer, and other equipment related to pool maintenance. Working Conditions: -Tobacco and Drug free environment -Possible exposure to bodily fluids while performing rescues -Possible emotional stress when a lifesaving rescue is performed or witnessed. -Indoor pool - Warm conditions; sitting for maximum of 30 minutes at a time; exposed to pool and cleaning chemicals -Outdoor pool - Exposed to sunlight and heat, occasionally exceeding 100 degrees; exposed to inclement weather, often wet and humid conditions; sitting for four 15 minute rotations. Minimum Qualifications: -Must be at least 15 years of age -Experience preferred, but not necessary for the right candidate -Must possess (or be in the process of, or enrolled in a class) an American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. -Must possess an outgoing personality; treat others with kindness; be courteous and tactful at all times; ability to exercise independent judgment within the limits of the positions; ability to make quick decisions and act quickly in rescue situations -Ability to work flexible hours with evening, weekend and holiday work required; ability to appear on time for work; appear to work in professional, approved uniform - looking neat and clean -Ability to understand and follow posted rules, procedures and directions. -Ability to work independently and as a team member -Attention to details; pride in appearance and work place -Required attendance to mandatory trainings and in-services -Ability to maintain accurate record keeping, such as time sheets, chemical records, daily duties, etc -Ability to pass pre-employment testing that may consist of, but not limited to, a background check, drug screening, and a physical skills evaluation screening Agency Information: The Gordon Jewish Community Center (GJCC) is at the center of Jewish life in Nashville, providing recreational, educational, social and cultural programs and services to over 1,700 member families.
