    Network Engineer II  Dark Fiber Transport Engineer

     

    Job Description

     

    As a Backhaul Commissioning & Integration Network Engineer, you will be part of the National Network Deployment Team. The Engineer will operate under the direct supervision of the Team Lead Engineers. The Engineer will provide cost effective support and implementation solutions to the company's Telecommunication Programs, You will be responsible for the integration of multiple backhaul solutions in a live production network deploying the following transport solutions: Dark Fiber, Lit Fiber Dedicated Ethernet (1 Gigabit, 10 Gigabit, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet Circuits. The position will require the Engineer be directly involved in implementing backhaul solutions across multi-vendor platforms (i.e. Cisco Provider Edge routers, Pre-Aggregators, IP Aggregators, and DWDM optical platforms).  In addition, the Engineer will assist field installation teams in the commissioning / test and turn-up of new site builds as well as augmenting operational systems. The engineer will be tasked with configuring network devices and triaging technical problems. Develop and enforce policies and procedures, properly organize projects, tasks, and provide best possible end user support experience. Use best practices in system installation, configuration, and monitoring to ensure minimum downtime and disruption to the network.

     

    Responsibilities

     

    ¿ Partner with commissioning & integration deployment teams on turning up new Dark Fiber Rings, cell site migrations and new site build activities. 

    ¿ Develop backhaul network device configuration scripts  

    ¿ Perform Commissioning & Integration activities on a live production network with approved maintenance window on multiple backhaul solutions such as Dark Fiber, Lit-Fiber over Ring, Necklace, and Hub-n-Spoke network topologies.  

    ¿ Implement Cell Site Router configurations on the following network devices (Cisco ASR901-IOS, 920-IOS XE, 903 IOS-XE, and 9000 IOS-XR, Juniper MX80). 

    ¿ Turn up new sites establishing neighborhood adjacencies with the following IGP and EGP routing protocols MPLS, IS-IS, BGP, OSPF, LDP, MPLS L3VPNs

    ¿ Perform RAN Re-IP activities to support successful migration on Dark Fiber solution. 

    ¿ Perform Fiber Optical light level testing including CWDM and DWDM.  

    ¿ Work directly with vendors, carriers, and internal departments to troubleshoot and resolve network issues

    ¿ Assemble site specific CIQ (Customer Information Questionnaire) source data to auto-generate backhaul network device configuration scripts 

    ¿ Provision network elements in database tool and applicable Element Management Systems as needed 

    ¿ Complete Spirent Q-Scope RFC 2544 and TWAMP connectivity test to actualize backhaul acceptance tasks

    ¿ Perform prerequisite task(s) needed to ensure that backhaul is ready and accepted. 

    ¿ Support field implementation and performance troubleshooting efforts

    ¿ Escalate client problems according to established procedures but exercising judgment in the process

    ¿ Ensure configuration MOPs are implemented correctly

    ¿ Address process gaps to improve workflow activities 

    ¿ Prepare, report, review test results/Methods of Procedure (MOP) documentation. 

    ¿ Ability to plan and lead network maintenance windows   

    ¿ Share knowledge with other team members on network devices or operating systems

     

    Qualifications

     

    ¿ University degree in computer science or electrical engineering and/or 5 years equivalent work experience.

    ¿ Previous experience working in telecom network infrastructures, preferably with 3 or more years in the providing implementation and technical support Dark Fiber and Lit-Fiber backhaul/transport solutions. 

    ¿ Intimate familiarity and design experience with DWDM/CWDM technologies

    ¿ Thorough understanding of SONET, DWDM and CWDM protocols and standards

    ¿ Working knowledge of fiber-optic communications technology including CWDM and DWDM.

    ¿ Desire to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks with minimal direct supervision

    ¿ Strong knowledge with MPLS, IS-IS, BGP, OSPF, LDP, MPLS L3VPNs

    ¿ Working knowledge of CWDM, DWDM and optical networking technologies

    ¿ Familiarity with test equipment and techniques for performing OTDR, Power Meter.

    ¿ Strong engineering practices (documentation and procedures)

    ¿ Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    ¿ Excellent diagramming and documentation skills

    ¿ Ability to manage long-term, project/milestone based work with multiple teams

    ¿ Working knowledge of fiber-optic communications technology including CWDM and DWDM

    ¿ Strong network design skills

    ¿ IP addressing/subnetting 

    ¿ Knowledge of OSI model 

    ¿ 3-4 years of hands on experience configuring and deploying Cisco Routers in an IS-IS, MPLS, and BGP network environment

    ¿ Experience and understanding of some or all of the following areas: SONET, IP subnetting and layer 2/3 routing, DWDM, dark fiber services on Ciena & Cisco Optical platforms

    ¿ Strong demonstrated understanding and implementation of advanced routing protocols BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, Layer 2/3 VPNs, BFD and IPsec 

    ¿ Industry recognized certification such as CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE. CCNA Route Switch or Service Provider certification REQUIRED. 

    ¿ Ability to configure Cisco devices using IOS, IOS-XE, and IOS-XR

    ¿ Knowledge of all types of circuits ¿ Microwave, Leased Ethernet, Dark and Lit Fiber, MPLS, WAN, MAN, P2P, P2MP, etc.

    ¿ Hands of experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting the following Telecom Wireless network routers: 

    o IPAs: Cisco - ASR9010, Cisco - ASR901, ASR920, ASR903, Juniper MX-80 routers

    o EMS Platforms: Cisco Prime Network

    ¿ Perform Packet analysis and network protocol dissection skills, using tools such as Wireshark/Ethereal

    ¿ Strong collaborative skills to work effectively with teams throughout organization.

    ¿ Demonstrated problem solving and analytical thinking skills
