    Job Description

    Summary:

    The Great Lakes Science Center seeks a creative individual to join our Program Development team. An Education Specialist will conceptualize, write, train staff, and teach students as needed throughout the year on engaging and inquiry-based educational experiences. Generally, the Education Specialist will use 85% of their time facilitating educational experiences and training staff and 15% of their time creating and writing curriculum. These percentages are subject to change based on the needs throughout the seasons of the year. For example, the Education Specialist may have more writing time and less facilitation in the summer months, versus when schools are in session.

    Educational experiences include but are not limited to: day and week-long camp programming, family and student workshops hosted in-house and as outreach to schools and community centers, and other guest experiences. Developing and delivering public-facing programs such as shows, cart activities, and media opportunities are also available. The Education Specialist will be encouraged to participate in team-building and professional development activities to support their career. This is a part time position which reports to the Manager of STEM Curriculum.

    Work Environment:

    This job operates in a professional office and classroom-type environment. When an outreach program is needed, the Education Specialist will need to travel with their own transportation to the school, community center, etc. to facilitate the program at that location.

    Physical Demands:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

    Please note that this position requires working outdoors for prolonged periods in varied weather conditions, frequently climbing narrow stairwells and occasionally lifting heavy objects such as supply bins and demonstration props. It may also include working with chemicals and gases including but not limited to liquid nitrogen, dry ice, nitric acid, hydrogen, and oxygen. Training will be provided. Please also note that this position requires weekend, holiday, and evening hours to meet the needs of Science Center operations. Scheduled hours will vary seasonally; therefore, ideal candidates must be flexible to accommodate needs.

    Education and Work Experience Qualifications:

    Required:

    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • 1-3 years of formal and/or informal teaching experience using inquiry based, hands-on methodology
    • 1-3 years of experience with program writing/development and delivery of learning programs
    • Original, written lesson plan upon request

    Preferred:

    • Bachelor’s degree (or pursuing) in science, education, or related field of study
    • 1-3 years of experience with training programs for formal and/or informal educators
    • Bilingual and able to read, write and speak Spanish proficiently
    • Hold a teaching license for the state of Ohio

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications (K/S/A):

    • A working knowledge of the Ohio Learning Standards and current formal and/or informal education trends
    • Ability to lead a classroom of students or group of visitors using a variety of classroom management techniques
    • Ability to distill complex ideas into age-appropriate concepts and activities
    • Ability to follow through on full cycle program development including: innovation and conceptualization of the idea, prototyping, developing/writing, training, and teaching.

    Rate: $17/hour
