In concert with each summer MTX, the MCMWTC Formal Schools teaches the Animal Packing and SOF Horsemanship Courses. The Animal Packing Course is designed to teach alternative methods for transporting crew-served weapons, ammunition, supplies, and wounded personnel to and from areas inaccessible to mechanized and air mobile transportation. The course subjects include:
The pack animals may then be employed by the USMC Infantry Battalion, Special Operations Forces (SOF) or the OPFOR conducting that MTX in any or all of the above mission profiles.
The SOF Horsemanship Course is designed to teach Special Operations personnel alternative methods for transporting personnel, crew-served weapons, ammunition, supplies, and wounded personnel to and from areas inaccessible to mechanized and air mobile transportation. It also teaches the students how to utilize the animals as an infiltration platform. Course subjects include an introduction to animal packing, the anatomy of pack animals, animal packing techniques, acquisition of pack animals, casualty evacuation techniques, riding horses, animal first aid and health maintenance, and bivouac considerations. The pack animals may then be employed by the SOF unit conducting that MTX in any or all of the above mission profiles either as part of the Blue Force or as part of the OPFOR.
The Animal Packing and SOF Horsemanship courses were created to support USMC, US Army, and USSOCOM doctrine requiring the use of pack animals to support the conduct of mountain warfare operations. USMC and US Army history is full of examples where pack animals have been employed in the mission profiles outlined above in support of combat operations from Asia, to North Africa, to Europe, to the Caribbean. SOF have employed pack animals and equine mobility platforms in combat during the Global War on Terror and routinely do so in training during Geographic Combatant Commander and USSOCOM Theater Engagement and Cooperation efforts via Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) missions with partner nation forces in South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Both courses are in high demand from the MCMWTC’s conventional force and SOF training audiences and the MCMWTC is the only training venue in the DoD for such instruction.
The Veterinary Technician/Equine Health Instructor will assist the MCMWTC Stable Master and his staff in maintaining the MCMWTC’s herd of more than sixty equines (mules and horses). This includes instructing USMC, US Army, US Navy, foreign militaries, Federal Law Enforcement, and SOF students in the anatomy, health concerns, and care of equines as part of the instructor staff of the MCMWTC’s Animal Packing and SOF Horsemanship courses.
The Veterinary SME will assist the MCMWTC Stable Master in preventative care of pack animals, austere and field medical treatment of pack animals, update and development of pack animal doctrine, update, and development of pack animal periods of instructions.
The Veterinary Technician is a key enabler assisting planning, maintain the health of the MCMWTC pack animals, and developing Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) for conducting pack animal operations in support of strategic through tactical operations. The ability to effectively conduct pack animal operations while deployed as a component of a Joint Force conducting combat operations in the complex, compartmentalized terrain of a mountainous environment is an essential skill for deploying units. Particular attention must be paid to training leaders to understand the impact and application of pack animal and its direct effects on the tactical situation.
