Job Description
POSITION OVERVIEW
The operations manager is the person who works under the supervision of a plant manager and ensures smooth flow of work in his absence. It is a supervisory position and is responsible for the general plant operation and maintenance to achieve the assigned production objectives by motivating the staff members.
• Establishing and maintaining production and shipping schedules and ensuring that quality product is consistently delivered to customers on time and within budget for labor hours, machine hours and material costs
• Managing production operations such that equipment and employee resources are utilized efficiently, productivity is high and product quality requirements are met and exceeded
• Ensuring that process and equipment capabilities meet or exceed company and industry standards and requirements; implementing operations-related initiatives that result in increased efficiency, improved productivity and reduced job-related costs
• Full participation in weekly production meetings and daily work-related meetings is expected
• Maintaining company policies and procedures with respect to production, materials, and equipment-related activities, ensuring that employees report labor hours, machine hours, material usage and activities in accordance with company policies and procedures and within the current operations management and control systems
• Implementing operations and function-related budgeting goals and objectives; establishing benchmarks for monthly, quarterly, and annual case production and shipments, material receipts, production work-in-process completed and inventory levels within the Plant Level of Operations
• Preparing and presenting to Director of Operations, the weekly executive summary that includes production, purchasing, shipping, receiving and inventory numbers as part of the system of internal checks and balances
• Recruiting, selecting, training, motivating and evaluating all operations employees in accordance with company human relations policies and procedures
• Helping to build and manage within a team-based production environment and developing and maintaining good working relationships between production, materials, and equipment maintenance
• Interfacing between the employees in his/her department and the Director of Operations, the Executive Vice-President and President of the Company and supporting company policies, goals, objectives, and initiatives
• Ensuring that all product produced meets quality requirements in accordance with company policy, procedures and requirements and in accordance with industry standards
• Keeping the Director of Operations abreast of successes, progress and potential problems and offering appropriate solutions for those problems
• Simultaneously handling, prioritizing and resolving problems effectively
• Ensuring that shipment deadlines and budget and profitability objectives (i.e. gross margin and operating profit) are met and exceeded on a quarterly and annual basis as established by Director of Operations
• Ensuring achievement of production metrics and shipment objectives, including labor hours per case, machine time per case, quality and cost per case; ensure that labor and machine efficiency is within company guidelines; ensuring that periodic maintenance, repair, rework hours and waste are within company guidelines
• Ascertaining that purchasing, production support, shipping and receiving performance metrics and objectives and inventory units and balance objectives are achieved or exceeded on a quarterly and annual basis while ensuring on-time delivery of quality product to customers at budgeted cost per case
• Ensuring quality products are produced and quality relationships are established and maintained between production, materials and equipment maintenance personnel, with engineering and sales, customers, subcontractors and others in the area and in the industry
• Ensuring customer complaints are fewer and of less seriousness than company targets and objectives
• Ensuring that reporting and supporting documentation is completed on time and in accordance with company procedures
• Achieving Company goals to produce quality product on time and within budget hours are supported in theory and followed in practice
CANDIDATE PROFILE
The ideal candidate is a talented executive who possesses:
• Three to five year’s relevant industrial and manufacturing experience in a fluid pasteurized process facility
• Associates degree in industrial, mechanical, or electrical engineering or equivalent experience. Manufacturing engineering and operations management an added plus
• Relevant and current technical knowledge concerning products, materials and equipment
• Knowledge, skills and ability to understand and manage food processing activities and production lines to provide expertise and technical support to all plant employees, to make equipment, production and materials related decisions
• Ability to maintain production planning and scheduling, shop loading, expediting and dispatching, purchasing, shipping and receiving and inventory control functions using manufacturing systems in place
• Ability to lead and motivate teams to produce quality product, on schedule and within budget and participate in and facilitate operations related team meetings
• Outstanding communication skills with proven ability to successfully lead and develop a team
• Excellent team leadership skills and an ability to set goals, accomplish objectives, coach and counsel while adding to the organizational climate and culture
• Personal characteristics reflective of a fast paced industry: high energy, self-motivated, positive attitude, service oriented, flexible, ethical, loyal and with high degree of integrity
• Business maturity, team orientation and proven ability to positively influence change and ensure business discipline through periods of growth while simultaneously protecting the company’s operating principles and underlying entrepreneurial culture
• Demonstrated good judgment in prioritizing, expediting, investigating and resolving problems and issues and fosters harmonious relations with other company employees while meeting and exceeding customer requirements
