  • Responsibilities

    The Associate Comptroller for General Accounting and Financial Reporting at Boston University is responsible for the organizations external and internal financial reporting, coordinates external financial audits, oversees the University’s general ledger (including posting, allocation, and close processes), and manages accounting for subsidiaries, investment, endowment and gifts, cash and debt reconciliation and accounting, fixed asset accounting, and a broad portfolio of external financial and compliance reporting responsibilities. In addition, this position is a key contributor to the Financial Affairs team and is responsible for generating long-term departmental process improvement initiatives and eliciting feedback from other internal departments on financial information required by stakeholders.

     

    Major duties of this position include:

    • Leads a team which prepares and analyzes monthly management financial statements and annual external financial statements. Prepares other external financial reporting as required, including IPEDS.
    • Ensures adequacy of general ledger controls and data integrity of the ledger and related data bases/data warehouses used for reporting centrally and in the University’s schools and colleges, including participation of systems testing, and the sign-off on enhancements and periodic updates to the University’s financial systems.
    • Manages and coordinates the University’s annual audit, working closely with the Treasury and Investment groups, the Budget Office, and other Financial Affairs departments.
    • Works closely with University Development office, the Comptroller, and senior management to ensure appropriate accounting for gifts, pledges, and endowments.
    • Ensures appropriate accounting campus-wide for fixed assets and debt.
    • Develops and provides training to departments in support of building a strong knowledge base with respect to the University’s accounting policies and financial processes and procedures.
    • Identify, plan, and execute process improvements within the department to encourage change and innovation.
    • Supervises and professionally develops seven staff members.

    Required Skills

    • CPA and master’s degree (MBA, MSA or its equivalent).
    • 10+ years of experience in financial accounting management, preferably public accounting with a concentration in higher education and not-for-profit.
    • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in principles of internal controls, compliance, and GAAP.
    • Strong leadership and relationship-building skills. Previous experience supervising, managing, and training staff.
    • Advanced skills utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, including complex formulas in order to acquire, organize, and analyze data.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Detail oriented, demonstrating accuracy and quality of work output.
    • Ability to work optimally independently and/or collaboratively in a small, collegial team environment.
    • Self-motivated, proactive, intellectually curious.

     

    Preferred Skills:

    • Experience with reporting tools, enterprise-wide accounting software (i.e. Oracle, People Soft, Banner, ERP, and/or SAP).
