As a Group Therapist specializing in addiction medicine, you will lead structured group therapy sessions designed to support individuals in overcoming substance use challenges. Your responsibilities will include facilitating discussions that encourage peer support, teaching coping strategies, and promoting the development of healthy behaviors. You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to align group therapy goals with individual treatment plans, ensuring a holistic approach to recovery. Strong communication skills, compassionate demeanor, and expertise in addiction recovery principles are vital for this position.
Job Duties
Facilitate structured group therapy sessions for patients in detox and residential levels of care, using evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and psychoeducation
Create a supportive and inclusive group environment that fosters peer connection, open dialogue, and mutual accountability
Guide discussions that address addiction recovery topics, including relapse prevention, emotional regulation, stress management, trauma, and interpersonal skills
Encourage patient participation while managing group dynamics and ensuring emotional and physical safety during sessions
Collaborate with individual therapists, case managers, and medical staff to align group content with individual treatment goals
Observe and assess group members’ engagement, mood, and progress; communicate relevant clinical observations to the treatment team
Document group attendance, participation, and clinical impressions in accordance with OhioMHAS standards and facility protocols
Contribute to individualized treatment planning and case reviews by providing therapeutic input based on group participation
Intervene therapeutically when conflict, resistance, or emotional crises arise within the group setting
Assist in orienting new patients to group expectations, confidentiality guidelines, and the role of group therapy in recovery
Provide education on addiction, co-occurring mental health conditions, recovery tools, and healthy lifestyle practices
Participate in staff meetings, interdisciplinary rounds, and ongoing training to support program goals and continuous improvement
Maintain professional boundaries and uphold ethical standards in all therapeutic interactions
License Requirements/Qualifications:
Any license through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board
Preferred degree in social work or related field
1+ years of experience in a detox or residential addiction treatment setting
Well-versed in a variety of evidence-based modalities (e.g., DBT, CBT, MI).
Exceptional interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Proficiency with EMRs, LOCUS, ASAM, and Joint Commission.
Level 2 Background Check and Drug Test required
Ability to work under stressful conditions and be flexible
Knowledge of Joint Commission, OhioMHAS, and HIPAA standards
Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal forms
Knowledge of state and federal statutes regarding patient confidentiality laws
Knowledge of Drug-Free Workplace policies and procedures
Emotional intelligence to be able to de-escalate situations
Experience and passion working with clients struggling with substance abuse or mental health disorders
Communication and teamwork skills
Documenting all necessary information in EMR/EHR platform
Collaborating with the treatment team to ensure quality client care
Performing other duties as necessary
Successful completion of background screening, fingerprints, and required in-service courses (i.e., CPR, Security Awareness, HIPAA, OSHA, AIDS/HIV, COVID-19, Domestic Violence, Medical Errors, Baker Act, Co-Occurring disorders, etc.)
Must be tech-savvy and proficient in Microsoft (Word, Excel, etc.)
