    A guidance counselor at an athletic school plays a pivotal role in supporting the academic, athletic, and personal development of student-athletes. This unique position blends traditional counseling responsibilities with a strong understanding of the demands and opportunities within the athletic environment. The guidance counselor serves as an advocate, mentor, and resource, helping students navigate the challenges of balancing rigorous training, competition schedules, academic workload, and personal well-being.

    Key Responsibilities

    Academic Support and Planning

    Assist student-athletes in selecting courses that fulfill graduation requirements and maintain athletic eligibility.

    Monitor academic progress, identify at-risk students, and develop intervention plans.

    Collaborate with teachers and coaches to create flexible academic plans around training and travel schedules.

    Promote effective study habits, time management, and organizational skills.

    Coordinate with academic support services such as tutoring and study halls.

    Personal Counseling and Emotional Wellness

    Provide confidential counseling services addressing personal, social, and emotional issues.

    Support students with stress, anxiety, performance pressure, identity development, and interpersonal conflicts.

    Facilitate small group sessions on topics such as resilience, coping strategies, and healthy relationships.

    Recognize signs of mental health concerns and coordinate external referrals.

    Career and College Readiness

    Guide students through the college admissions process (applications, essays, interviews).

    Collaboration with Coaches and Staff

    Program Development and School Initiatives

    Qualifications and Skills

    Master’s degree in school counseling, psychology, education, or a related field.

    Valid state certification or license as a school counselor.

    Experience working with adolescents, preferably in athletic or educational settings.

    Understanding of NCAA/NAIA eligibility and compliance standards.
