  • Responsibilities

    This position is primarily responsible for ensuring the company program, policies, and forms as well as business procedures and actions meet the highest possible standards for the safe operation of company vehicles involved in the transport of hazardous materials and/or wastes. Responsible for compliance with federal, state, other regulatory agencies (e.g. OSHA, MSHA, FMCSA, PHMSA, EPA etc.), and customer requirements related to drivers and vehicles transporting hazardous materials and/or wastes.

     

     ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    1. Create and/or update the company program, policies, and forms as well as business procedures governing the safe transportation of hazardous materials and/or wastes ensuring they are compliant and practical, supporting managers and drivers in their work.
    2. Work with drivers, operations, logistics, maintenance, HR, and others in setting standards and solving problems that have the greatest impact on safe, efficient fleet operations to meet transportation safety requirements while considering business practice, customer requirements, and budget; lead project teams to improve transportation safety activites.
    3. Set and/or help set company and business hazardous materials and wastes goals and objectives to improve the safety and performance of drivers and vehicles by fleet.
    4. Create and/or communicate hazardous materials and wastes transportation safety information to managers and drivers, ensuring training and learning that support safe operations and compliance (including pre-licensing, safe driving, telematics, law and regulation, best practice, etc.).
    5. Conduct or coordinate for training that advances hazardous materials and wastes fleet safety and the ability of the company and businesses to meet performance and quality requirements.
    6. Ensure administrative requirements are met to maintain driver and fleet compliance, including, but not limited to, licensing, permits, driver authorizations, record-keeping guidelines, and inspections (in general and specifically as it relates to hazardous materials and wastes).
    7. Support external agency and customer communications, coordination, and audits, serving as the company expert on hazardous materials and wastes.
    8. Inspect, evaluate, and report on hazardous materials packaging, transportation, treatment, and disposal operations across the company to continuously improve our processes and systems.
    9. Enforce appropriate regulations, codes, and laws and act as a liaison with regulatory agencies when requested and needed; also enforce company policy and forms and business procedures.
    10. Monitor and, when needed, create or update material that supports hazardous materials and wastes processes and systems (e.g. LMS use and/or training materials, guidebooks, job aids, work instructions, etc.); also, trained, able, and willing to respond in the event of an emergency.
    11. Serve as alternate for the DoT Trainer and be prepared to support general transportation safety tasks.
    12. Perform other duties, as directed.

    Required Experience

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

    1. Combination of education, experience, and/or training in the area of hazardous materials and wastes transportation; knowledge of transport and disposal procedures for safe handling of hazardous materials and wastes.
    2. Successful completion of a collegiate level course of study with a degree or equivalent level of experience (3 to 5 years) in a transportation safety field focused on hazardous materials and wastes.
    3. Field experience and technical expertise in the same or similar industry(ies), with DoT, EPA, and hazardous materials and wastes knowledge preferred.
    4. Familiar with transportation safety administration, documentation, and federal/state databases; experience interacting with/responding to federal and state agencies/entities is preferred.
    5. Excellent organization, interpersonal, and communication skills, with an ability to prioritize and complete multiple projects and requests with competing deadlines.
    6. Proficient with Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.); prior experience working with a Learning Management System preferred.
    7. Ability to physically enter and work around large fleet vehicles and handle associated equipment and materials (mid to light lifting/carrying); also, work in a typical office environment.
    8. Ability to travel occasionally; prefer possession of a CDL with related endorsements and training experience.
    9. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel, stay calm and positive under pressure, and work with various people and groups to solve problems.
    10. Program, policy, and/or procedure writing experience and record keeping skills (administrative ability).
